Major Duties

Under general supervision of the Associate Director, the Lead Locksmith plans, designs, and oversees the implementation and maintenance of the master lock and key program.  The incumbent serves as the departmental expert on all matters about locks, locking systems, and fastening devices, and consults with staff on the types of systems and devices most appropriate for new facilities and replacements. 

  • Provides analysis, controls computerized maintenance management systems, and manual systems, and oversees the planning and implementation of locks and locking plan initiatives. 
  • Determines material and equipment needs; estimates costs for new locks or for replacement locks; analyzes and responds appropriately to emergencies.
  • Maintains complex manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems to manage a facility of 37 buildings with over 3,200 locks that are in good operating condition.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience as a journey-level locksmith that included lead work coordination responsibilities and training in master key systems.
  • Combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a locksmith’s apprenticeship program.
  • License or certification as a locksmith and a valid California Driver’s License.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge: of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the locksmith trade, including complex access and control systems; all types of locks, fastening devices and related hardware; applicable state codes about the locksmith trade including those related to fire exits, door hardware and fastening devices.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of master key systems and a working knowledge of effective supervisory practices and techniques; electrical locking and security systems and devices.
  • Must be able to perform journey-level locksmith work; use features of applicable access control systems; read, interpret, and work from shop blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications; maintain computerized inventory and master locking systems records; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.
  • Ability to: maintain computerized inventory and master locking systems records; lead, instruct, and coordinate the work of a small group or crew of skilled and semi-skilled assistants; determine staffing, material, and equipment needs; estimate costs for new locking systems or for replacement systems; analyze and respond appropriately to emergencies; and maintain more complex manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems.

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • Classification: Lead Locksmith / 6643  / grade 1
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $6151 - $7028 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $6151 - $7942 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday (7 am-3:30 pm); may include evenings and weekends.  
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
