Mission:

The Health Equity Research and Education Center is a university-chartered center at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) dedicated to community-partnered participatory research and health equity advocacy. The HERE Center grew from the foundation that the Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) Promoting Opportunities for Diversity in Education and Research (PODER) program provided. Located in CSUN’s first research building, Lilac Hall, the center was chartered in 2019 with the goal of institutionalizing and accelerating the university’s health disparities research through dedicated campus resources, community affiliations, and joint activities with research partners. We seek and initiate cooperative research projects targeting local health issues. This is a two-year position with possibility for extension.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The START Transfer Coordinator will assist CSUN Transfer STEM students as well as aspiring Transfer STEM students at our partner community college institutions with a sense of belonging and tools for academic success.  The Coordinator will work closely with the Principal Investigators (PI’s) of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) START and National Institutes of Health (NIH) Educational Modules to Broaden Academic Research Cultures (EMBARC) grants. This includes providing comprehensive support to the program team, peer mentor support, email management, office assistance, student advising, networking with other transfer-focused units on campus and project coordination. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

 

Qualifications:

Badge Peer Mentor Training and Support:

• Collaborate with the HERE Center Operations Manager to plan and facilitate a 40-hour Badge peer mentor summer training program that incorporates Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Transfer Receptive Culture• Work collaboratively with 6-8 peer mentors to set goals and support their professional growth within the mentoring role (1-1.5 hours/each mentor)

• Collaborate with HERE Center Operations Manager to schedule, plan the agenda, and facilitate the weekly mentor meeting

• Schedule and lead monthly meetings with graduating seniors from previous year of the Badge program to support academic and career development

 

EMBARC Peer Mentor Training and Support:

• Collaborate with EMBARC PIs and HERE Center Operations Manager to plan and facilitate 2-week face-to-face summer intensive and peer mentor training that may parallel Badge peer mentor training

• Lead weekly team meetings and work collaboratively with 10-15 peer mentors to set goals, practice workshop presentations, assist conference presentations/attendance as needed, and support their professional growth within the mentoring role

• Conduct mid-semester and end-of-semester evaluations to review grades, individual development plans (IDPs) and other career-specific topics

• Coordinate with EMBARC Recruitment Specialists and CC Liaisons to support students in scheduling rooms and maintaining attendance records for face-to-face workshops across the year at various CC campuses (please see below)

 

Campus/Community Partnerships and Operations:

• Establish a welcoming and helpful environment for walk-in transfer students seeking assistance, such as academic requirements and available resources

• Collaborate with other transfer agents, stakeholders on campus, and student-facing partners (e.g., CSUN HSI Grant Engineering partners, LAVC, LAPC, COC, LAMC) to create a network of support for transfer students. Share insights and best practices to enhance the overall effectiveness of transfer support services

• Collaborate and assist other NSF HSI and NIH EMBARC partners, staff, and PIs to promote and recruit students to affiliated STEM transfer programs (Badge, EMBARC, CSUN U301 Transfer Success Seminar)

• Organize and coordinate various community-building events, such as "Transfer Week," "End of Semester Event,” "Transfer Recognition Ceremony" and other transfer networking events (e.g., NSO Transfer Orientation, Student Outreach & Recruitment) each semester

 

Knowledge, Specialized Skills, and Abilities:

• Master’s degree in relevant field or Bachelor’s degree with at least two years of relevant experience.

• Possess in-depth knowledge and familiarity with the intricacies of the transfer process between higher education institutions in California.

• Stay informed about evolving policies, procedures, and requirements related to transfer students, especially STEM transfer students.

• Exhibit exceptional organizational skills to effectively manage multiple responsibilities, projects, and deadlines.

• Maintain structured systems for information storage, retrieval, and documentation.

• Communicate clearly and effectively, both in written and verbal formats.

• Convey information concisely and understandably, whether interacting with students, colleagues, or stakeholders.

• Demonstrate the capacity to work independently, taking initiative to complete tasks and achieve objectives.

• Collaborate seamlessly within a team environment, fostering open communication and contributing to collective goals.

• Possess proficiency in utilizing learning management systems such as Canvas or similar platforms.

• Exhibit a proactive approach to problem-solving, addressing challenges with creativity and analytical thinking.

• Preferably, have prior experience in roles involving program coordination, class instruction, or similar responsibilities.

• Past experience in managing educational programs enhances the ability to navigate the complexities of academic support and student engagement.

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

This position is employed through The University Corporation (TUC).

The anticipated hiring range: $27 - $28/hour

Full Pay range: $26.60 - $37.82/hour

Time Base: Full-Time
