Major Duties

Under the general supervision of the Commander, the Patrol Corporal performs the duties of a patrol officer and provides supervision in the absence of the shift Sergeant. Corporals assigned to specialized units (e.g. K-9, Motor, etc.) may act as a lead or coordinator for the unit.

  • Responsible for supervising sworn personnel who perform basic patrol functions through directed and multi-dimensional patrol plans, community policing, assessing incidents for potential timely warnings, making notifications to command staff as appropriate, and other duties normally expected of a Sergeant.
  • Ensures that police officers strictly adhere to the mission, vision, and value statements for the department and professional standards as outlined in the law enforcement accreditation program.
  • Responds to all emergencies including medical and mental health emergencies, hazmat and fire situations, arrests, critical incidents, persons of concern, and serious crimes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST
  • academy and a Basic Course Certificate.
  • Two or more years of active law enforcement experience.
  • Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
  • Possess a valid POST. Certificate of Eligibility or a POST Basic Certificate in good standing.
  • Completion of First Aid and CPR Certificate and Defensive Driving Course is required along with other training as assigned.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of law enforcement methods and procedures, criminal codes and laws, and investigative techniques and procedures.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgments
  • Ability to provide effective leadership and direction to field personnel during assigned shift.

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver and more.
  • Classification: Corporal / 8365 / Step 15 - 22
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE is $8,869 to $10,404 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; rotating shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period.
