Major Duties

Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Landscape and Grounds, the Lead Irrigation Specialist supervises and performs specialized work on irrigation systems in grounds areas throughout the Campus. The incumbent is responsible for planning irrigation systems, overseeing systems, and maintaining an irrigation preventive maintenance program.

  • Oversees and maintains all irrigation systems and makes repairs on irrigation valves, heads, pipes, controllers, and other related irrigation equipment. Inspects services and directs the work of others in the repair and scheduling maintenance of irrigation systems.
  • Works with the management team on providing recommendations for an irrigation preventive maintenance program.
  • Coordinates and monitors irrigation schedules through the use of the energy management system computer and other types of controllers. Performs the above work in all landscape and parking areas of the University grounds.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Two years of experience in planting, cultivating, and maintaining flowers and shrubs, or in general grounds maintenance work.
  • One year of experience in the maintenance, repair, or modification of irrigation systems and irrigation equipment, preferred.
  • LICENSE: CANDIDATE MUST POSSESS A VALID CALIFORNIA DRIVER’S LICENSE.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the soil conditions of the various areas of the campus; climate of the area in which the campus is located; and the mechanical principles of sprinkler equipment.  Technical knowledge and experience in the programming, maintenance, repair, or modification of irrigation systems and equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and caring for flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees.  General knowledge of common plant diseases, pests, and weeds; approved methods and materials used in their control and eradication, horticultural methods and materials; and planting and growing requirements of plants commonly grown in California.
  • Ability to lay out, coordinate, and oversee the work of others; provide training, interpret policies, and explain methods and procedures; inspect and evaluate the work of others; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and perform general gardening and grounds maintenance work.

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • The university offers an excellent benefits package, including but not limited to: medical, dental, vision, retirement & savings, tuition waiver, and more.
  • Classification: Lead Groundsworker / 0726 / 1
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $3907 - $5512 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $3907 - $6598 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday.
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period. 
  • The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
