Position:

The Department of Music at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor to serve as the Director of Choral Studies.

The successful candidate will teach in the Choral area and have research/performance interests in this field.

In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate may be required to teach on weekdays, evenings, weekends, and/or online and will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion. Given CSUNs commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement in a diverse environment, the successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

Required Qualifications:   

  • Graduate degree in Choral Conducting, Choral Music Education, or a related field from an accredited institution
  • Evidence of excellence in in-person choral conducting and teaching at the professional or collegiate level
  • A record of achievement in scholarly/creative activity and demonstrated potential for further professional growth

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral or terminal degree in Choral Conducting, Choral Music Education, or a related field from an accredited institution
  • Evidence of effective engagement OR potential to engage with a diverse student body using culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for all students
  • Experience creating a student-centered learning environment and adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring
  • Research and performance experience that includes working with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Proven recruiting experience within a choral performance and teaching context
  • Additional experience in choral genres such as Latine/x or Black music traditions, jazz, world music, gospel, rock/pop or other styles
  • College or University level teaching and rehearsal experience

Responsibilities:

  • Lead Choral Ensembles and Choral Conducting/Education Classes in the Music Department curriculum. The teaching assignment would likely include some of the following courses:
    • Northridge Singers
    • University Chorus
    • Choral Methods
    • Choral Literature
  • Serve as advisor to graduate Choral Conducting Students
  • Supervise the Graduate Choral Conducting Program
