Major Duties

Under general supervision, the Stockroom Support Technician prepares materials for teaching laboratories, including gases, liquids, solutions and solids, unknowns, glassware, and other technical equipment, while following all applicable safety rules, chemical hygiene, and other standards.  The incumbent will assist instructors in selected analytical and physical chemistry laboratories by operating instruments, distributing materials and equipment to and picking up materials and equipment from laboratories, and aiding research students and faculty with requests for research support, identifying equipment and materials needs. 

Participates in the ordering, storing, and distribution of all equipment, instructional materials, compressed gases, packages, and services provided by the stockroom.

  • Assist in minor maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment needed for student laboratories, especially analytical and physical laboratory instrumentation including spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and chromatography.
  • Maintain supply inventories, maintain equipment inventories, collaborate with asset management to relocate or remove unused equipment, and keep work areas clean and tidy.
  • Develop new instructional materials, run experiments as pilots, improve student experiments as necessary and as directed, introduce new methods, edit student laboratory manuals, produce instructional videos, and troubleshoot student experiments as necessary.
  • Assist in training faculty, staff, students, and student assistants in new procedures or equipment.
  • Staff the stockroom window and perform record keeping.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Equivalent to two years of experience providing instructional support services for a Chemistry or Biochemistry unit or related discipline, acting as a student assistant, or producing materials or supplies related to the discipline. OR
  • Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience. OR
  • Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a related discipline may be substituted for the experience.
  • Four-year college degree in chemistry or biochemistry is strongly recommended.
  • Experience in academic laboratory preparation and experience with handling chemical substances, including hazardous materials is highly desirable.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of principles of providing support services; knowledge of the common principles, methods, and techniques related to the discipline; knowledge of the materials, supplies, and equipment and their uses related to the discipline.
  • Familiarity with scientific instrumentation, set-up, calibration, and repair is recommended; experience in spectroscopy (UV-Vis, fluorescence, IR, ICP-MS), electrochemistry (CV, RDE), and chromatography (HPLC, GC, GC-MS) preferred.   
  • Experience with chemical identification and safety procedures is recommended
  • Ability to evaluate the materials and supplies used; ability to learn to adjust and make minor repairs on scientific equipment; ability to operate scientific or highly technical equipment and to interpret results; ability to wear personal protective equipment (goggles, gloves, laboratory coat and/or respirator) for extended periods.
  • Ability to plan activities and prepare schedules; ability to use methods, techniques, and skills related to the discipline in preparing specialized materials.

 

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule

  • Classification: Instructional Support Technician I / 1615 / 1
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $4206 - $4253 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $4206 - $7299 per month.
  • HOURS: Full Time; 40 hours per week; Monday through Friday. 
  • This is a Regular position with a one-year probationary period. 
  • The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
