California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a tenure track faculty ASSISTANT PROFESSOR position in the Computer Information Systems Department in an area related to the study and/or promotion of Computer Information Systems.

Cal Poly Pomona is one of three polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University system and among 12 such institutions nationwide. The Cal Poly Pomona campus is located less than 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles at the intersection of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Student Population. California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona – nearly half (49%) of new students were transfers in Fall 2020.  58% of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible.  The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 49% Latinx, 21% Asian, 15% White, 3% Black, 5% International 3% two or more races, 3% unknown and less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander and less than 1% Native American Indigenous. Thirty-nine percent of the student body were STEM majors with the top enrolled programs including psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology and computer science.

Tenure track faculty hires will demonstrate a commitment and record of contributions through their teaching, scholarship, or service to these inclusive excellence criteria (a minimum of two must be addressed in the Student Success Statement):

  1. Integrates the values of equity and inclusivity into their teaching, scholarship and/or service contributions with diverse student populations;
  2. Incorporates the contributions and struggles of historic ethnic minority groups and communities into their teaching, scholarly work, and/or service contributions;

College of Business Administration. The College of Business Administration at Cal Poly Pomona is a diverse community of students, teacher-scholars, and staff committed to active learning through the application of theory to practice. The College partners with its stakeholders to develop individuals with the knowledge and skills to be successful and to contribute to a dynamic global business environment.

The College of Business Administration is accredited by AACSB and has been recognized by the Princeton Review, which included us in its 2011 edition of “Best 300 Business Schools,” and U.S. News and World Report that continually ranks us as one of the premier master’s-level public universities in the West.

The College of Business Administration provides eight subplans leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. It also offers several graduate programs - Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA), Master of Science in Information Security (MSIS), and Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA).

Department of Computer Information Systems. The Computer Information Systems (CIS) department is an option for the degree of Business Administration. The CIS Department also supports three graduate programs in Information Security, Business Analytics and Master of Business Administration.

The CIS department provides students with the education to become Information Technology leaders. Our cutting-edge, career-focused programs and learn-by-doing teaching will make our graduates recognized nationally for their outstanding Information Technology expertise, innovative problem-solving ability, and effective interpersonal and communication skills. 

The CIS Department is nationally known for the advancement and depth of its undergraduate curriculum. We are an inclusive group of 12 tenured and tenure-track faculty from diverse backgrounds that serve approximately 940 undergraduate majors and 36% of them are of underrepresented minorities. Faculty members share a strong commitment to collegiality, collaboration, dedicated teaching, innovative scholarship, active participation in the shared governance of the department, and robust intellectual engagement with each other and our students. The department has a strong learn-by-doing philosophy and maintains a very competitive and up-to-date curriculum.

There are several student clubs that are associated with the CIS department - Forensics and Security Technology (FAST), Management Information Systems Student Association (MISSA), and Students with an Interest in the Future of Technology (SWIFT). Student clubs are very active in organizing large events, such as the Western Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition and the annual Information Technology Competition. Since 2011, Cal Poly Pomona has had a Center of Innovative Analytics supporting industry and community partnerships and projects with companies such as Boeing, Meta, City of Pomona, and PCV Murcor. The Center for Innovative Analytics supports students’ participation in analytics competitions, course projects, and research and industry projects led by faculty.  Through innovative educational programs, the center works to develop students for future careers in data science and business analytics. Position description:

The faculty is expected to provide innovative and cutting-edge teaching and evidence of a strong publication record or potential in Information Systems/Business Analytics related fields such as data analytics, data mining, and cloud computing, as well as play an active role in maintaining and developing student engagement in CIS curriculum; advising, coaching, and mentoring students; and serving on department, college, and university-wide committees. Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines.

We are seeking candidates who have a passion for taking leadership roles in developing new innovative programs, promoting a research environment within the Department, supporting the University, as well as partnerships with the community to enhance the social, economic, and cultural conditions of the region and beyond. Teaching responsibilities may include undergraduate and/or graduate CIS courses at the Cal Poly Pomona campus.

Minimum requirements

  1. Degree Requirement:
  • Ph.D. in Information Systems or closely related disciplines from an AACSB accredited university. A terminal degree must be earned by the start of the appointment.
  1. Academic (i.e., course works, teaching, or research) or industry experiences in at least one of the following areas:
    1. Business Analytics
    2. Cloud Computing
  2. Candidates with a doctorate conferred more than 5 years ago must have evidence of an active research agenda.
  3. A Student Success Statement that demonstrates your commitment and record of contributions through the applicant’s teaching, scholarship, or service, by addressing at least two of the inclusive excellence criteria listed above.  (Limit to 2 pages) 

Preferred/Desired Qualifications: 

  1. Academic and/or industry experiences in one or more of the following areas:
    • Data Warehousing
    • Data Story Telling
    • Data Visualization
    • AWS/Azure Platform
    • Cloud computing
  2. Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse groups of students and faculty.
  3. Evidence of teaching excellence or commitment to teaching excellence.
  4. Online teaching experience.

  • Final candidates being interviewed are expected to make a presentation of creative work and a teaching demonstration to faculty and interact with students.
