Anticipated Hiring Range: $138,000 - $146,400 annually (Commensurate with qualifications and experience)

THE DEPARTMENT:

The Center for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence (CAFE) is dedicated to Cal Poly Pomona's purpose of providing an outstanding education to all our students, via our mission to enhance faculty work and life. We support all faculty in learner-centered teaching, research and creative activities, and service to the university and community. We are a resource for faculty and staff to find and use the best technologies in pedagogically excellent ways to support student learning.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Educational & Faculty Development

  • Envision, lead, and implement a wide array of faculty development events, programs, and services to meet the strategic priorities of CAFE. Supporting the retention of a diverse faculty prepared for the breadth of students at CPP.
  • Work with the Provost, AVPs, deans, and key campus stakeholders to plan and carry out strategic teaching and academic technology initiatives at scale.
  • Support faculty career development throughout all phases of the Lifecycle of the Professoriate.
  • Ensure that all programs, events, and services include best practices for equity, belongingness, and accessibility to support the academic success of a wide range of learners including first generation students, historically under-served students, and adult learners.
  • Consult and collaborate with faculty and other stakeholders in identifying and developing programs and services.
  • Facilitate workshops, programs, events, faculty learning communities, and other offerings on a variety of topics.
  • Enhance expertise and ability to support faculty and campus teams by applying organizational and learning theories to emerging technologies, with particular attention to generative artificial intelligence (gAI) applications that relate to teaching, learning, and other areas of faculty responsibility.
  • Perform faculty consultation and coaching.
  • Support CAFE’s Faculty Fellows on various projects.
  • Communicate effectively with faculty.
  • Interact with and provide leadership on relevant system-wide and campus governance committees.
  • Lead the assessment of CAFE activities.

 

Department Leadership & Management

  • Develop strategic plans and workplans for CAFE, consulting with relevant stakeholders.
  • Develop and oversee the CAFE budget in collaboration with Academic Resources.
  • Serve as HEERA manager for all CAFE staff, and any Faculty Fellows of 50% time or more with CAFE.
  • Recruit, hire, and evaluate CAFE team members, including Faculty Fellows.
  • Provide direction and feedback to all CAFE staff and Faculty Fellows.
  • Foster professional growth and an atmosphere of collegiality, collaboration, and equity in the CAFE team.
  • Publicize and promote CAFE’s services, resources, and activities.
  • Advocate for CAFE’s needs to campus leadership
  • Foster collaborations at CPP and outside CPP that are beneficial to CAFE’s mission and priorities.

 

Funding Development

  • Develop proposals and manage grants for external and internal funding opportunities to support CAFE’s work.
  • Professional Development
  • Maintain and enhance scholarly, technical, professional, leadership, and pedagogical skills through writing and publication, research, workshops, conferences, and trainings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD - Terminal degree in home discipline
  • 5 - 7 years of university teaching experience, service, and scholarly/creative activity
  • 3-5 years of leadership or management experience offering faculty professional development
  • Demonstrated commitment to culturally relevant and inclusive academic practices that equitably serve diverse first-generation students and diverse faculty
  • Excellent oral, written, in-person, and remote communication skills for both one-on-one and group settings, including when dealing with difficult, sensitive, or divisive topics.
  • Excellent customer service and public relation skills.
  • Professional and calm demeanor with respectful treatment in all interactions.
  • Array of research and analytical skills suitable to identify, develop, and assess effective programming
  • Ability to interpret and implement technical procedures, contracts, policies, and executive orders
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships across the university, working effectively with faculty and administrators to create collegial relationships
  • Ability to effectively manage a budget and facilities; ability to manage, develop, and review staff
  • Understanding and commitment to universal design, usability, and Section 508 accessibility standards
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an environment with a wide range of people representing various interests and perspectives, and with faculty possessing a variety of teaching styles
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple assignments

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Record of successful faculty work that would warrant a tenured position in one of the disciplines of the university
  • Sound understanding of educational/faculty development theories and general familiarity with literature in this area; reputation for excellence at state or national levels in the educational/faculty development field
  • Demonstrated expertise in inclusive excellence work
  • Significant leadership or management experience

University Driving Requirements

Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Driver’s license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points, if their license is Class C or, 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points, if their license is Class A, B, or C with endorsements.
