Our CACREP-accredited Counselor Education Program emphasizes inclusivity, diversity, and social justice advocacy. We focus on experiential learning, personal growth, and professional development through a relational approach. Our dedicated faculty mentors students in community leadership roles.

POSITION DETAILS: This is a full-time in-person tenure track position at the Assistant Professor rank beginning in the Fall 2025 semester. Salary is dependent upon qualifications and professional experience. The faculty member selected for this position is housed in the Graduate and Professional Studies branch in the College of Education. Courses may meet in the morning, late afternoon, or evening. We are an on-ground, and in-person, program.
As a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and awardee of the Seal of Excelencia certification, Sacramento State is hiring a cohort of faculty who will support our commitment to Latinx/e student success during the 2024-25 tenure-track hiring cycle. We are looking for teacher/scholars who have an established commitment to teaching, research, and/or service in and with the Latinx/e community. Successful candidates will have demonstrated two or more of the four Latinx/e Student Success Cohort Hire criteria (see Required Qualifications below).

Supporting Student Success
This faculty position supports student success through anti-racism, equity, and inclusion in teaching, scholarship, and service. The selected candidate will teach graduate-level CACREP core counseling courses and Rehabilitation Counseling concentration courses, they will also provide supervision in our Center for Counseling and Diagnostic Services. The role involves implementing program learning outcomes, supporting accreditation needs, advising students on professional development, and licensure. This faculty member will contribute to admissions, retention, and graduation efforts, with a focus on supporting a diverse student body, especially those from BIPOC communities. Experience in mentoring student leadership is preferred.
Supporting anti-racist and inclusive campus
The selected faculty member will contribute to program evaluation and assessment to CACREP, California Board of Behavioral Sciences, and California CTC standards. They will participate in ongoing program assessment, focusing on inclusive practices within curriculum and graduate experiences. This position will help in the continual development of anti-racist and inclusive curriculum with an intersectional lens, fostering multicultural competence and interdisciplinary dialogue. The faculty member will engage in course development, teaching, and program evaluation, while mentoring students in clinical competencies and research addressing multicultural competence. They will support the development of diverse faculty and contribute to culturally competent curriculum across the College of Education and University. The role includes mentoring part-time faculty to ensure consistent anti-racist and inclusive practices in counseling courses. Collegial collaboration with all program specializations is expected.
Supporting Anchor University Activities and Engagement
This new hire will support the Anchor University Mission by participating in supervision at the Center for Counseling and Diagnostic Services (CCDS) and help integrate services within the community. They will contribute to program grant writing focused on training and community partnerships, aid in growing the Rehabilitation Counseling concentration, including supervising interns. The hire will mentor students in research and presentations at various conferences to enhance professional competencies. They will also build national presence by guiding students in activities like the ACA Ethics Contest, CSI, potential study abroad, and other scholarly opportunities. Additionally, the hire will support professional development and advocacy aligned with the Anchor University Mission. They will attend faculty meetings, serve on various committees, and engage in scholarly and community service activities.
This faculty member will support the MS Counseling Program and larger Sacramento community partners in professional development opportunities. They will offer expertise in continuing education topics for students, site-supervisors, and community members, including supervision training at the annual Spring Symposium and Site Fair. The faculty will collaborate with colleagues to implement program evaluation and investigate issues including training culturally competent practitioners, effective admissions practices, multicultural competency, anti-racist practices, and clinical training. They will participate in biannual community advisory committee meetings to build partnerships and gather program feedback. The hire will provide practicum supervision for trainees, ensuring gatekeeping and anti-racist practices that support Rehabilitation counseling students while considering client welfare. Additionally, they will support program activities such as the Chi Sigma Iota chapter of Chi Sigma Sigma.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- An earned doctorate in Counselor Education from a CACREP accredited program is required. ABD candidates from CACREP accredited programs will be considered, provided all degree requirements are completed by August 2025. Applicants must also be currently licensed as a Counselor in California or their home state or be eligible for licensure in California (LPCC) within a year.
- Demonstrated potential for teaching excellence and scholarly activity at the university level is essential. Teaching effectiveness can be demonstrated through various methods such as service learning, distance learning, integration of clinical experience, and creation of culturally responsive environments. A thorough knowledge of theory including addiction and rehabilitation counseling theory models is also required.
- Demonstrated ability and commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse academic environment. This includes working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, as evidenced by scholarly pursuits, teaching evaluations, and letters of recommendation. Experience with inclusive, anti-racist practices, social justice, and equity work within research, presentations, counseling, or student interactions is also necessary.
- A strong Counselor Education identity as evidenced by professional practice, active participation in counseling professional organizations, and research. Successful applicants will also have a demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty and students in community service, focusing on the growth and well-being of individuals and communities. Service should challenge power differentials and prioritize the needs of others.
- Latinx/e Student Success Cohort criteria (demonstrate two or more of the following):
- Excellence in teaching Latinx/e students;
- Effective service (e.g., advising, mentoring) to Latinx/e students;
- Research, scholarship, and/or creative artistic expression focused on the Latinx/e community;
- Knowledge (professional background and/or training experiences) that advances our institutional commitment to Latinx/e student success.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Candidates with experience in clinical and community settings are preferred, although those with broader counseling experiences are also encouraged to apply.
- Evidenced by experience in addiction counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical mental health counseling, and professional memberships in relevant organizations. Experience with diverse populations is also preferred.
- Experience in graduate-level instruction, supervision, mentoring, and research-related activities is essential.
- Specialized knowledge or experience in a range of counseling areas is preferred, including but not limited to individual and group counseling, addiction and substance use, multicultural counseling, collaborative consultation, assessment, grant writing, systems theories, addiction counseling, crisis/trauma counseling, and supervision.
- Experience with CACREP and/or statewide accreditation processes, as well as familiarity with licensing and licensing boards, is desirable.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills are also preferred.

The classification annual salary range for this position is $71,100 - $151,128; the anticipated annual starting salary is $76,884.
