Position Summary
The Department of Classics and Humanities at San Diego State University invites applications for a one-year appointment (possibly renewable for a second-year contingent upon performance and funding availability) for The Schuch Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Classics. The Schuch Fellowship is designed to allow newly completed PhDs adequate time for research, while teaching a lower course load in classics and mentoring students in the major. The selected fellow will engage in comprehensive research, teaching, and mentoring experience. Applicants should be prepared to teach courses in Greek and/or Latin language and literature at all undergraduate levels and to offer lecture courses in classical literature, world mythology, and culture in translation. The Fellow will teach three courses each academic year, achieve significant progress on a research project, give a public presentation at the end of the year, and participate in the intellectual life of the department and campus.

Apply by Monday, April 13, 2026 to ensure full consideration. Applications submitted after this date will be reviewed on an as-needed basis, and the position will remain open until filled.
Complete dossiers will include:
- An application letter of introduction/interest that details the candidates teaching interests and experiences, a brief summary of fields of research interest and expertise, and a clear prospectus (of no more than 1,000 words) detailing planned research for the year of employment
- Current CV
- The email addresses of three referees willing to provide confidential letters of recommendation. Applicants should advise their recommenders that dossiers will be weighted towards evidence of teaching versatility and excellence.

Only three letters of recommendation can be uploaded into the PageUp system, and only by direct submission of recommenders. Supplemental Information
The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
San Diego State University is not a sponsoring agency for staff or management positions (e.g., H-1B visa). Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Education Code 89521 Requirements: Applicants will be required to disclose whether they have received a final administrative decision or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last 7 years only after a determination is made that they meet the TECHNICAL LETTER HR/Employment 2026-02 Attachment A Page 3 of 10 minimum qualifications for the position, and before an offer of employment is extended.
