Description

The San Diego State University Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) seeks to hire a tenure-track assistant professor with expertise in construction planning, execution and management of resilient infrastructure.

This position targets individuals who understand how large-scale infrastructure projects—such as highways, bridges, airports, mass transit, and utility networks—are planned, built, delivered, and maintained. The successful candidate will advance research and teaching in heavy civil construction operations and methods, constructability, project delivery methods, risk management of infrastructure projects, and related areas. 

  • Infrastructure resilience: Climate adaptation, disaster recovery, resilient supply chains, risk-based infrastructure planning.

  • Infrastructure Constructability:  Emphasis on the design-construction interface for improved constructability (project safety, risk, cost, schedule, etc.) 

  • Construction Operations & Methods:  innovative construction methods for infrastructure construction.

  • Project Delivery & Heavy Civil Management:  Project delivery system to support infrastructure project objectives (Design-Build, Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), Public-Private Partnerships (P3), infrastructure asset management)

  • Risk management of infrastructure projects

  • Resilient Construction Execution: Field-level adaptation strategies for building in extreme environments, constructing under active climate threats, and scheduling around severe weather disruptions.

  • Workforce & Safety Systems:  safety management systems, heavy-equipment and operational safety, and workforce training for heavy civil construction.

The CCEE department offers four undergraduate majors: Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Construction Management. Our faculty is committed to teaching and research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management (JRFCEM) Program is housed in the CCEE department and was established in 2007 through an endowment from the Filanc family and supported by numerous construction firms in the San Diego region.

Qualifications

Required qualifications by date of application

  • A record of original research / scholarly / creative accomplishments and demonstrated capacity to a) develop a vigorous and independent program of research / scholarship / creative activity, b) teach graduate and undergraduate courses; and c) engage in both campus and professional service activities.

  • Demonstration of past accomplishments and/or future plans in at least two (2) or more of the “Building on Inclusive Excellence” criteria. 

Required qualifications by date of hire

  • Terminal degree in [name of discipline(s)], with all degree requirements met.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in the discipline and its methodologies

  • Record of publications, presentations, and/or funding 

  • Professional licenses or certifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency in interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches 

  • Potential for securing extramural funding

  • University-level teaching experience

  • Preparation for teaching students from diverse backgrounds

  • Demonstrated experience with relevant teaching technologies

  • Ability to direct advanced undergraduate student research

  • Ability to direct graduate student research

  • Understanding of the mission and goals of the academic unit and SDSU

The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. The anticipated salary range is from $105,000 - $108,000. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience, and salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances.
