San Diego State University (SDSU) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Intelligent Systems and Applications (ISA), with an expected start in Fall 2027.

The position is expected to contribute in the translation of intelligent system advances into impactful real-world solutions across domains such as, but not limited to, embodied robotics and control agents, intelligent cyber-physical systems, intelligent networking technologies, smart health and healthcare informatics,  AI-enabled clinical decision support,  smart database, smart infrastructure and transportation, and other core areas of computer systems and artificial intelligence.  Apply via PageUp by November 30, 2026 for full consideration.

Candidates should have research expertise in the design, analysis, and/or deployment of intelligent systems capable of learning, adaptation, perception, reasoning, or complex decision-making in dynamic, real-world environments.

The Department of Computer Science is home to faculty who are principal investigators of research grants from NSF, DOD, NIH, Google, etc. The department encourages collaborative interdisciplinary research with faculty members from other departments. We offer Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in both Computer Science and AI and Technology (AIT). Multiple faculty members are supervising Ph.D. students through two joint doctoral programs (JDPs): SDSU-UC Irvine Computational Science JDP and SDSU-UCSD Engineering JDP. Qualifications

Required qualifications by date of application

  • A record of original research / scholarly accomplishments and demonstrated capacity to

    • Develop a vigorous and independent program of research and scholarship in Intelligent Systems and Applications. 

    • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses;

  • Demonstration of past accomplishments and/or future plans in at least two (2) or more of the “Building on Inclusive Excellence” criteria.

Required qualifications by date of hire

  • Terminal PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a closely related field, with all degree requirements met.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong technical and theoretical understanding of intelligent and AI systems, algorithms, and models

  • Experience in practical application of complex intelligent agents to cross-disciplinary domains

  • Record of publications, presentations, and/or funding

  • Potential for securing extramural funding

  • Preparation for teaching students from diverse backgrounds

The minimum salary for this position is based on the current CSU salary schedule for Assistant Professors and may be revised based on contract collective bargaining. The anticipated salary range is $110,000 – $115,000. Salary placement will be based on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience, and salaries higher than the published maximums may be offered in limited circumstances.
