Position Summary
The Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance assists with leading the day-to-day operations of the Athletics Compliance Office, including rules education, interpretations, monitoring, enforcement, waivers, and eligibility. This position serves as a key compliance resource for coaches, student-athletes, staff, and university constituents while supervising and developing compliance staff and interns.
Key Responsibilities:
- General Duties
- Supervise the day-to-day operations of the Athletics Compliance Office and internship program, including leading staff meetings, conducting evaluations, and supporting staff development.
- Participate in strategic planning; develop and update compliance policies, procedures, and the Compliance Policies and Procedures Manual; and represent the Compliance Office at campus, athletic, and community events.
- Compliance Education
- Lead and coordinate rules education for coaches, staff, student-athletes, administrators, and other university constituents, including monitoring regulatory changes and providing timely training.
- Develop and present educational materials for meetings, onboarding, preseason programs, websites, social media, student-athletes, representatives of athletics interests, and community partners.
- Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement
- Serve as the primary compliance liaison for Football, Men’s Basketball, and Women’s Basketball while providing rules interpretations and overseeing compliance monitoring systems, including complimentary admissions and Teamworks.
- Develop and maintain audit, monitoring, allegation, and self-reporting systems; identify and research potential violations; and assist with preparing self-reports.
- Waivers and Eligibility
- Oversee the preparation and submission of NCAA and conference waivers and coordinate eligibility clearances and certifications for transfer and incoming student-athletes.
- Review NCAA, conference, CSU, and SDSU forms for eligibility concerns and maintain current waiver and eligibility databases.
What We are Looking For:
- Bachelor’s degree and four years of full-time experience working in NCAA compliance.
- Experience providing NCAA rules interpretations and presenting educational sessions.
- Thorough knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations and experience with compliance monitoring systems.
- Strong written and oral communication, analytical, organizational, and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to explain complex regulations to diverse audiences and foster a culture of compliance.
- Experience with NCAA LSDBi, RSRO, ACS, Microsoft Office, and related compliance technologies.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and work effectively with student-athletes, coaches, staff, and campus partners.
- A master’s or juris doctorate degree and NCAA Division I or FBS compliance experience are preferred.

Position Information
- This is a full-time, at-will role, offering comprehensive benefits.
- Position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
- Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

Department Summary
The Department of Athletics, utilizing the services of over 150 employees, is responsible for the intercollegiate athletics program at San Diego State University. Currently, there are 18 sport programs, approximately 550 student-athletes, and 17 offices in the department. The offices include the following: The Aztec Club/Development, Administration, Athletic Medicine, Business Office, Compliance, External Corporate Sales, Equipment, Event Management/Facilities and Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing, Media Relations, Strength and Conditioning, Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, Ticket Office, and Video.
The Compliance Office’s mission is based on four pillars: Education, Interpretation, Enforcement, and Oversight.
- Education - Foster a culture and commitment to compliance by ensuring coaches, student-athletes, Athletics Department staff and university constituents have a clear understanding of the rules. Utilize a variety of methods and make learning the rules a positive experience. Ultimately, each person is responsible for adherence to the rules.
- Interpretation - Assist constituents (student-athletes, coaches, Athletics Department staff, University staff, and representatives of athletics interests) in accomplishing their goals within the rules. Determine permissible activities utilizing resources including NCAA and conference manuals, interpretations and case precedent as well as contacts at the conference and NCAA offices. Maintain an open door/open access policy whereby coaches, staff, and other constituents are able to seek rules interpretations from the Compliance Office before they act.
- Oversight – Establish and maintain comprehensive systems to protect and assist coaches, student-athletes, the Athletics Department, and the University in following the rules. Monitor the systems and those who use them. Continually evaluate and seek to improve efficacy of systems.
- Enforcement - Create an environment where allegations, investigations, and self-reports can be processed in a prompt fashion and comfortably discussed in a confidential manner. Review facts to determine whether a violation occurred, review precedent to determine the appropriate penalties to impose, and self-report all violations to appropriate constituencies.

Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree.
