Position Description

San Francisco State University, Department of Family, Interiors, Nutrition & Apparel offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Apparel Design & Merchandising beginning August 2025. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests include product development, the social psychological aspects of clothing, and visual merchandising and promotion. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment -- through their research, teaching, and service -- to the diversity and excellence of our academic department.

Required qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. from an accredited program; one degree in apparel design & merchandising or related field.  Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
  • Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students

About the Department

The Family, Interiors, Nutrition & Apparel (FINA) Department is composed of major programs, uniquely woven together to provide students with an integrative experience which builds understanding of contemporary issues that impact the food, shelter, and clothing, needs of individuals, families, and communities.

At the heart of the FINA programs is the goal of providing an enriched educational experience that is built on the tenets of the family and consumer sciences (FCS) Body of Knowledge through research-based methods and practices that address quality of life issues.

Responsibilities 

The position requires predominantly undergraduate and graduate teaching in apparel design and merchandising, mentoring and advising predominantly undergraduate as well as graduate students, developing an active ongoing record of scholarship in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments.

Compensation                                                         

The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is:

$96,500.00 – $98,500.00 annually (12 monthly payments per academic year).

Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm).

Professional development funds, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
