Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Student Health Services (SHS), the Nurse Practitioner works in the context of a group practice that emphasizes patient engagement over high volume. The incumbent reviews and interprets patient history; performs physical examinations; orders and reviews tests; evaluates, plans, and provides primary care predominantly for college students with common illnesses, injuries, seeking contraceptive care, or needing health maintenance. The incumbent collaborates with and guides the actions of Medical Assistants and Registered Nurses and some ancillary staff. The incumbent consults with other providers (psychiatrists) as needed and when health problems or conditions are not covered by protocols. The Nurse Practitioner enables improvement of both individual and team effectiveness by supporting the development and implementation of sustainable practices and protocols that foster student success and reflect the best of college health.

Position Information

Patient Management Medical Duties

· Works independently according to guidelines and practices described in department approved protocols.

· Obtains detailed health histories and performs complete physical examinations using applicable clinical techniques and diagnostic tools.

· Documents working diagnoses, health care plans, disposition, referrals and prognoses in the electronic health  record (EHR) or on paper when required, using the subjective, objective, assessment, and plan (SOAP) format,  problem lists and medication lists.

· Diagnoses common acute and chronic illnesses and injuries.

· Develops and implements treatment plans based on evaluation of patients’ health histories, physical

examinations, and test results.

· Furnishes medications to patients according to supervising Physician’s protocols and the Board of Registered  Nursing (BRN) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) regulations.

· Instructs and counsels patients regarding family planning, health problems, preventative care and health maintenance.

· Instructs and counsels patients regarding use of medications

· Performs other procedures and minor surgeries such as injections, immunizations, placement and removal of contraceptive devices, incisions and drainage, wound care, suturing, minor orthopedic procedures

· Maintains compliance with established University policies, procedures, and protocols for quality assurance and  infection control.

· Establishes and documents health care plans and prognoses and maintains records in SHS approved system and format.

· Documents each patient encounter in a manner that clearly illustrates / shows appropriate medical decision making, relative to established medical standards of care, as it related to Student Health’s current scope of medical practice

· Orders, interprets and evaluates routine lab tests and other diagnostic tests and procedures including x-ray examinations.

· Performs simple Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-Waived tests including Urinalysis (U/A), Urine Pregnancy testing, Rapid Strep, Finger Stick Glucose, and Provider Performed Microscopy (PPM).

· Provides contraceptive counseling and surveillance for long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) insertion and removals.

· Assesses and treats gynecological issues (vaginitis, abnormal bleeding, breast conditions, etc.).

· Conducts well woman exams and provides sexually transmitted infection (STI) education, screening and treatment.

Clinic and Administrative Medical Duties

· Uses computers, including internet browser, email, Microsoft Office, EHR and the practice management software applications used at SHS.

· Stays current with EHR features and practical options for improved functionality.

· Supports development of remote and virtual services.

· Explores clinic practice options (e.g. Dashboard; Whiteboard), helping adoption and effective use.

· Maintains HIPAA standards.

· Helps communicate clinic IT needs to Director, Health Information Systems Analyst, and Leadership Team.

· Helps team to prepare for triennial and surprise surveys.

· Ensures consistent support for quality control and peer review program.

· Supports opportunities for synergistic work with Counseling & Psychological Services, SAFE Place, Health Promotion & Wellness, and other campus partners.

· Fosters appropriate, best comprehensive response for student, clinic, and campus; supports inclusive student engagement with health and wellness services.

· Cooperative working relationship with medical, nursing, medical assistants, clinical assistants, clerical and allied professional staff in SHS, as well as the community.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing and primary care principles, methods and procedures; thorough knowledge of medical theories, practices and protocols relative to the scope of practice, subject areas such as growth and development, pathophysiology, psychosocial assessment, pharmacology, nutrition, disease management, and the principles of health maintenance, applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to practice as a Nurse Practitioner; and general knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices, if assigned lead work direction.

Abilities: Possess the abilities and clinical competence required to work as a Nurse Practitioner including, but not limited to, the ability to work independently in assigned areas of practice established by the supervising physician; demonstrate clinical competence in eliciting patient histories, conducting examinations, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, assessing patient needs and making appropriate referrals; use clinical techniques and diagnostic tools; interpret laboratory and other test results; keep current with developments in the medical field pertinent to the incumbent’s scope of practice; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health center staff; be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients; and, if assigned, provide lead work direction to specified health center support staff.

Education and Experience: Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or University-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty.

License and Certifications: Possess and maintain a valid California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing. In addition, if the incumbent is delegated the authority to furnish medications, the incumbent must possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate. If the furnishing procedures include the delegated authority to furnish specific controlled substances, incumbents must also possess and maintain a valid DEA number

· Possession of a valid license as Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner from California Board ofRegistered Nursing (BRN).

· Possess certificate obtained by successful completion of a nurse practitioner course of study.

· Comprehensive knowledge of current of advanced nursing and primary care principles, methods and procedures.

· Possession of valid furnishing number and certificate.

· Possession of a current, valid DEA Certificate.

· Possess current CPR certificate.

· Must pass a credentialing check including verification of education, training, and licensure.

· Demonstrated ability to analyze situations accurately and to take prompt appropriate action including performance of therapeutic procedures in response to life threatening situations.

· Demonstrated ability to perform patient assessment and triage.

This position requires the successful completion of a background check.
