Job Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director of Architectural Trades & Auto Services, the Locksmith is assigned to the Lock Shop within the Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations and works independently or as a team member under the general supervision of the Lead Locksmith. The Locksmith performs the full range of skilled journey-level locksmith work including installation, repair, remodel and maintenance of manual and automated locks, locking systems and security devices; low voltage computerized access control systems; and door openers, closers and hardware. Incumbents install, maintain, repair and adjust all types of locks and their components for campus buildings, rooms, furniture and vehicles; cut keys; troubleshoot and repair computerized access control systems; maintain and repair automatic door openers, door closing units, and control gates; and service and maintain safes.  Incumbents in this classification also may provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, remodel and maintain all types of manual and automated locks, locking systems, security devices, and their components for campus buildings, rooms, furniture, and vehicles
  • Troubleshoot and repair with low voltage computerized access control systems, door openers, closers and hardware
  • Assists in the development of master key systems and cut keys
  • Maintain and repair automatic door openers, door closing units, and control gates
  • Service and maintain safes
  • Records work efforts in detail within computerized recordkeeping systems and, where directed, on log sheets, and keeps accurate time records so as to ensure an appropriate level of documentation regarding actions taken to complete assignments
  • Respond to emergency calls and urgent needs
  • Consult and coordinate with campus customers and trade workers
  • Maintain inventory and records, order parts and supplies.
  • Train and provide work direction to skilled and semi-skilled workers

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  •  Knowledge of locksmith methods, materials, tools, and equipment
  • Expertise in all types of locks and fastening devices
  • Knowledge of electrical locking and security systems
  • Knowledge of applicable state safety codes and regulations pertaining to the locksmith trade, including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial safety for the State of California and California State Building Codes including those related to fire exits, door hardware and fastening devices
  • Ability to perform journey-level locksmith work
  • Ability to maintain computerized inventory and master locking systems records
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, diagrams, and specifications
  • Operates assigned radio for communication related to coordination and urgent needs, critical information, and status updates

 

Required Qualifications

  • Abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a locksmith’s apprenticeship program
  • Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations

 

License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education equivalent to that achieved within the locksmith trade or any equivalent combination of training and experience in the locksmith trade which demonstrates the achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
  • Thorough knowledge of the locksmith trade
  • Certification as a registered locksmith through the Associated Locksmiths of America or similar organization/certifications
  • Experience in the maintenance of a State facility, College or University or other commercial, multi-facility complex
  • Four years of journey-level work experience in the maintenance, repair, or construction related to locksmith work
  • Ability to successfully complete a background check

 

Compensation

Classification: Locksmith
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,462/month - $6,791/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,355/month - $7,801/month

Additional Information

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
