Job Summary

*This is a temporary, hourly, up to three-year appointment. *

Reporting to the Associate Director of Architectural Trades & Auto Shop, and under the Lead Painter’s direction, the Painter performs journey-level painting and finishing work independently or as part of a team. Duties include applying finishes (brush, roll, spray, electrostatic), hanging wall coverings, mixing/matching paints, sand/water blasting, erecting scaffolding or rigging, and painting signs and roadway markings. The role also involves advising on materials, inspecting work (including contractors) for quality and code compliance, estimating project costs and timelines, supporting paint shop operations, maintaining tools and equipment, following safety procedures, keeping records, preparing reports, and collaborating with other trades.

The Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations provides maintenance and operations services to a university campus spread across multiple sites comprised of +167 acres, 81 buildings, and more than six million gross square feet. The Architectural Trades & Auto Services Unit is one of the nine total shops in the Maintenance & Operations Unit and is comprised of a Facilities Project Supervisor, Lead Painter, four Painters who report up, through the Senior Director, and Maintenance & Operations who provides supervision, oversight, and guidance. Additionally, the Shop employs temporary Painters on a seasonal basis to support the needs of the campus.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply under coats and finish coats using the full range of application methods including brush, roll, spray and electro-static spray
  • Perform sand and water blasting
  • Erect scaffolding and/or hang rigging from electronic staging for painting projects
  • Paint signs and parking lot/roadway markings
  • Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations
  • Inspect related work performed by contractors
  • Estimate cost, time and materials for painting projects; participate in the maintenance and operations of a paint shop
  • Clean and maintain painting and finishing materials, tools and equipment used in the performance of duties
  • Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment
  • Maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems
  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings, trainings and functions
  • Reports problems and needed repairs to supervisor to be documented and scheduled.
  • Operates utility cart, pick-up truck, welding equipment, scissor lift, forklift, and other equipment, as certified, to access, repair, and transport personnel, equipment and materials

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the painting trade including painting, finishing, drywall, and paperhanging
  • Ability to select the most appropriate materials
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specification
  • Ability to recognize and accommodate changing priorities; meet deadlines/goals; and complete routine tasks despite intermittent interruptions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals throughout the organization as well as those outside of the organization who are directly or indirectly involved with projects and/or assignments
  • Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants

 

Required Qualifications

  • Must possess those abilities normally acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter’s apprenticeship program
  • Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations

 

License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate for the duties of the position and follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety
  • Achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter’s apprenticeship program
  • Knowledge of the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California
  • Possession of a current California lead abatement worker certification
  • Two years of journey-level experience in the painting trade
  • Experience working in a large commercial or public agency setting

 

Compensation

Classification: Painter
Anticipated Hiring Range: $32.79/hourly - $35.49/hourly (Step 4 – Step 8)
CSU Salary Range: $30.89/hourly - $45.01/hourly (Step 1 – Step 20)
