Job Summary

Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) is seeking a Senior Manager of Business and Operations to join our tight knit dynamic team! Located in Moss Landing, at the heart of the Monterey Bay, MLML empowers marine scientists through hands-on, interdisciplinary training and research. Reporting to the Executive Director of Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, the Senior Manager of Business and Operations provides high-level oversight of budgets, personnel, and operations across multiple funding sources, including state, research foundation, and auxiliary funds. The role works closely with the College of Science and SJSU main campus partners to optimize resources and support strategic initiatives.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage MLML budgets across multiple funding sources
  • Conduct financial analysis, forecasting, and reporting
  • Ensure compliance with CSU and SJSU financial policies
  • Manage daily operations to support faculty, staff, and students
  • Improve workflows and implement process improvements
  • Coordinate facilities, space utilization, and special events
  • Supervise staff and manage personnel processes
  • Lead hiring, onboarding, and performance management
  • Serve as liaison with University Personnel and foundations

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to communicate with constituents in a professional and respectful manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse community of faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical concepts, reports, and legal documents
  • Ability to think strategically and support the MLML Executive Director in recommending policy or procedural decisions
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Ability to develop, recommend, and implement improvements to fiscal and personnel processes
  • Ability to maintain relationships with customers, solicit feedback, and improve services and workflow efficiency
  • Ability to prepare and present analysis of budget, enrollment, planning, and related data
  • Ability to initiate and implement plans to solve problems in complex situations with limited standardization
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of the MLML management team with Dean’s office leadership to achieve agreed upon goals and objectives
  • Ability to recommend initiatives and changes to improve quality and services for MLML and the college
  • Ability to develop, communicate, and maintain guidelines and procedures to support the functions of MLML and the college, while operating as part of a team
  • Ability to think strategically and support leadership in policy and procedural decisions
  • Ability to train staff on processes related to budget, personnel, facilities, and operations
  • Ability to prepare reports, track progress, and ensure accuracy and timeliness of operations
  • Ability to document financial reporting policies and procedures
  • Ability to plan trainings and monitor staff performance

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three (3) years of manager experience
  • Experience with Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Four (4) years of budget experience including budget projections and analysis

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-Baccalaureate
  • Five (5) years of manager experience
  • Experience with SJSU financial systems or similar (PeopleSoft, data warehouse, CHRS, etc.)

 

Compensation

Classification: Administrator II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $8,500/month - $9,000/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,053/month - $16,221/month

The final hiring salary will be commensurate with experience.

Additional Information

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. SJSU will issue a contingent offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
