Position Description

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at San José State University is pleased to announce a search for a full-time, tenure-track/tenured faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor beginning in August 2027. We are seeking applicants from Statistics, Data Science, or closely related fields with a strong record of scholarly achievement, effective teaching, and demonstrated interest in departmental governance. The successful candidate would be teaching courses and supervising students in statistics, data science, or mathematics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, have an active research program that ideally includes students, and participate in departmental service activities. Our department has multiple growing undergraduate and graduate programs in statistics and data science; the successful candidate will help shape the future of these programs through curricular innovation.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is home to about 500 undergraduates and graduate students, 28 tenure ladder faculty, 25 part-time instructors and 40 teaching associates. We strive to prepare our students in statistics and data science through an array of courses and projects for cutting edge careers in Silicon Valley. CAMCOS is a program within the department that allows students to work on industry sponsored projects under supervision from faculty and industry mentors. San José State University has recently been awarded R2 status. Required Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in Statistics, Data Science or a closely related field completed by July 2027.
• Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
• A record of ongoing research and a well-developed agenda for future research.
• Experience or demonstrated potential for effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Preferred Qualifications

Priority will be given to candidates who possess one or more of the following:

• Evidence of effective service to their department, university, or profession commensurate with their experience.
• Experience or interest in mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate student research.

Key Responsibilities

• The candidate is expected to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate statistics, data science, or mathematics courses in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, to maintain a program of scholarly activity, and to work on curriculum and program development.
• The candidate is expected to supervise graduate students on their research projects in both the department’s MS Statistics program and the College of Science’s MS Data Science program.
• The candidate is also expected to supervise student teams working on industrial research projects in the department’s Center for Applied Math, Computation, and Statistics (CAMCOS) program.
• The candidate will participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committees and other service assignments.
• The candidate is expected to maintain a focused and impactful research agenda with peer-reviewed publications in reputable venues.
• Faculty shall organize all their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
• The candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience in understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, abilities, cultural background, ethnicity, religion, economic background, primary language, sexual orientation, gender identity, and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.

Other Duties

Note that all San José State University employees are considered mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and are required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment. Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act) and CSU systemwide policy, some faculty duties may lead to designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). CSAs are required to complete Clery Act training and to immediately report Clery incidents to the institution.

Faculty employees must complete CSU employee training as assigned and required based on their role (e.g., Data Security, FERPA, Preventing Discrimination and Harassment, Title IX, Health and Safety). The President may recommend or require compliance with safety measures that decrease the likelihood of COVID-19 transmission or illness and allows the core mission and activities of the campus to continue.

Conditional Offer

The work for this faculty position may only be performed in the State of California and requires establishing an on-campus presence.
