The Animal Science Department within the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, CA is seeking applications for a two-year, full-time, 12-month lecturer in Livestock Production starting August 30, 2024, ending August 31, 2026.

The position involves teaching courses in swine production and other livestock production courses and disciplines appropriate to the expertise of the individual and needs of the department. The successful candidate will establish an active relationship with other university faculty and researchers, leaders in livestock production and exhibition, students, and the general public to provide information and leadership related to livestock industry issues. 

In addition, candidates should be able to provide practical experience and individualized student-learning opportunities such as experiential classes, undergraduate and graduate research projects and student internships. Duties may also include, but are not limited to, supervision of livestock units, undergraduate senior projects, graduate student research, student advising, and teaching graduate level courses and/or in a Master of Professional Studies or certificate program. 

Service activities will include participation in department, college, and university committees and instructionally related activities. 

Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2023, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:
Lecturer A: $5,714-$7,293
Lecturer B: $6,788-$14,487
Lecturer C: $7,457-$15,902
Lecturer D: $9,412-$16,657

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • M.S. in Animal Science or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language.
  • The ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, government agencies, and the public.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and strong interest in undergraduate teaching.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The ability to collaborate with faculty across the College and University is desirable. Candidates who have international experience or the desire to cultivate international links are preferred. 

Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment.  Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Cal Poly's Animal Science Department provides one of the finest Learn By Doing programs in the nation.  The department, which includes over 800 students within the two majors, is considered by many the most comprehensive and the best undergraduate program in livestock production and management in the West. Through its faculty and students, the Department manages commercial herds and flocks of dairy and beef cattle, horses, sheep, swine, and poultry on a farm of over 6,000 acres. Extensive on-site facilities and state-of-the-art laboratories provide the resources for students to learn the principles required for successful careers in fields such as veterinary medicine, animal biotechnology, food animal production and processing, animal nutrition, and feed manufacturing.
