Position Description

Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Director of Planning, the Senior Project Manager is responsible for managing high complexity or a high quantity of assigned construction projects, including all aspects of project management from inception to completion in varying phases concurrently. The Senior Project Manager manages high dollar value projects (single or multiple projects), complex budgeting requirements, and multiple program elements and stakeholders, with proven experience in forecasting and managing project risk. The position requires a high degree of construction management knowledge, ability to manage capital projects of all sizes and is accountable for project budgets and schedules. The Senior Project Manager duties will require leading team(s) of project management and support staff to execute larger projects as well as provide support to other teams within the department. This position is required to interface with faculty, staff and administrators from a variety of colleges and departments, project donors/representatives, CSU officials, the State Fire Marshal, and various professional consultants, contractors, vendors and other related parties.

Department Summary

Facilities Management and Development (FMD), a unit within the Administration and Finance Division (AFD), is responsible for the planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, and repair of university facilities, grounds, and infrastructure. FMD consists of four critical and interdependent support departments, including Customer & Business Services; Energy, Utilities, & Sustainability; Facilities Planning & Capital Projects (FPCP); and Facilities Operations. The Senior Project Manager works within the Facilities Planning and Capital Projects (FPCP) Department of FM&D which provides project management, project planning, architectural and engineering design/coordination, and construction services, as well as campus master planning and space management for Cal Poly. Collaboration within the department and the campus community and providing a high degree of professionalism and customer services is crucial to the mission of the department.

Key Qualifications

  • Demonstrated extensive experience with project management, construction administration, and construction management including a thorough knowledge of building materials, costing procedures and the sequential methods of modern construction and maintenance practices, as well as capital construction project delivery methods.
  • Expert knowledge of a wide range of design and construction operations and knowledge of building codes, laws, ordinances and regulations, and trades applicable to building construction, maintenance, and repair.
  • Knowledge of construction management.
  • Expert knowledge of business and fiscal analysis, processes, and techniques related to project management in building, design and construction including an ability to analyze data and make accurate projections and cost estimates.
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn complex organizational and management structures and an ability to adapt to the dynamics of organizational, procedural, technological and policy change.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or related field AND eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in the area of project management. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Salary and Benefits

The anticipated hiring range for this role is $120,000 - $155,000 per year. Note that the offer is calculated based on the background and relevant years of experience of the individual selected.
