Position Summary:

Are you interested in working for UDRI, a national leader in scientific and engineering research, serving government, industry and nonprofit customers? An immediate opportunity exists for an Associate Thermal Process Engineer interested in closed / low carbon energy technology / systems development. We invite qualified applicants to apply for our Associate Thermal Process Engineer opening!

The Associate Thermal Process Engineer will plan, execute, and analyze experiments on thermal processes in the lab and at pilot plant scale under the supervision of the group/team lead in the Kinetics and Process Engineering Group. Responsibilities include designing test setups, acquiring data, and interpreting results to validate simulation models and improve process understanding. The role also involves analyzing data using statistical and engineering software to identify trends, optimize systems, and ensure accuracy. Additional tasks include documenting research findings, preparing technical reports, and publishing results in peer-reviewed journals. This person will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and technicians to ensure project milestones and deliverables are achieved. They will also work with external partners, including industry sponsors, universities, and government agencies, to promote knowledge exchange and facilitate technology transfer.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
2. Proficiency in heat transfer and thermodynamics, with experience in designing and optimizing thermal systems.
3. Familiarity with computational tools, such as CFD software (ANSYS, Fluent) and MATLAB.
4. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
5. Effective written and verbal communication skills.
6. Due to the requirements of our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. citizens.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may possess all of the preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

1. Experience with renewable energy systems or sustainable process design, such as methanation reactors and H2 generation systems.
2. Previous experience working with UDRI.
3. Proficiency with thermo-chemical process design, simulation and equipment sizing software, such as ASPEN HYSYS or similar.
