Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology of Yeshiva University (YU) invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Dean, the principal academic and administrative officer for this graduate school with an enrollment of 350 students across multiple programs.  Reporting to the Provost &Vice President for Academic Affairs at YU, the Ferkauf Dean is responsible for developing a strategic vision and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the School, its faculty, program directors, staff, and students.

The Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology; located in the Bronx, New York, is a well-established, diverse, co-educational graduate school distinctive for its commitment to teaching, research and clinical practice. The School offers two Psy.D programs – Clinical Psychology and School-Child Clinical Psychology – and a PhD program in Clinical Psychology Health Emphasis. All are accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) with the maximum seven-year accreditation status. The School also offers a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling preparing license-eligible Mental Health Counselors (LMHC).

The training clinic of the Ferkauf Graduate School, the Max and Celia Parnes Family Psychological and Psychoeducational Services Clinic, has provided low-cost, confidential, state-of-the-art mental health services for children, adolescents, adults, older adults, couples and families in the greater Bronx community and supervised clinical training and research opportunities for Ferkauf students for 45 years. The clinic underscores Ferkauf’s mission to serve its students and the larger community.  A new clinic space opened in the Summer of 2019. 

More than 3,000 Ferkauf alumni have achieved successful careers as clinical service providers, researchers, scholars, educators, administrators and professionals.  This is a credit to the dedicated Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology faculty who support students’ development through teaching, mentoring, supervision, and research.  Ferkauf faculty demonstrate a strong commitment to both their students’ and their own research, with many successfully obtaining grant funding and with publications and presentations impacting the field of psychology. 

Position Summary


The Dean of the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology is responsible for supporting the overall academic, clinical, and operational performance of the school.  The Dean provides inspirational, innovative, and enterprising leadership in the strategic development of the school - and in support of faculty growth and student success.    The Dean is an integral part of the University leadership team and represents the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology interests within the larger institution, building collaboration across schools and disciplines.  The Dean also engages a non-fiduciary advisory board and community partners to advance the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology mission and outcomes.

Required Qualifications


The Dean will possess a clear vision and an ability to understand and articulate the current state of psychology, its future in the 21st century, and the implications for the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology.   The successful candidate will have earned a doctorate and have a demonstrated record of distinguished scholarship and academic leadership. The candidate should be qualified for a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor and be licensed as a psychologist.  Both a firm grasp on the emerging challenges to psychology as a discipline that provides clinical, psychoeducational, and health services to diverse communities and an appreciation for the importance of obtaining federal and private grant funding are critical.

Desired Experience and Attributes


The search committee will highly value:

  • Significant experience in academic leadership in an accredited institution and ability to support a culture of shared governance
  • An understanding of how doctoral (PsyD and PhD) Master’s-level academic programs are developed, launched, accredited, and sustained, including familiarity with APA accreditation standards and State licensing regulations for Mental Health Counselling
  • Evidence of a genuine commitment to faculty with experience in faculty recruitment, retention, and development, including the ability to foster a collaborative culture across multiple programs
  • A record of scholarly productivity, mentoring of junior faculty and leadership and service to the profession
  • Support for a culture of research, knowledge and skills regarding grantsmanship, growth of research infrastructure, and creative support of faculty research
  • An understanding of the processes involved in attracting top graduate students, providing financial support options; and an ability to support student growth across academic, research and clinical domains
  • An ability to work with a non-fiduciary overseer board and collaborate on fundraising
  • Commitment to the recruitment and retention of a diverse cadre of faculty and students
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic visioning, planning and problem solving, and comfort managing a complex budget, success metrics and key performance indicators
  • Effective interpersonal skills including ability to build consensus, manage diverse needs and views and sustain a culture of collaboration and community
