Position Summary:       

The Student Onboarding Assistant, reporting to the Student Support Specialist of the MSW Program, will assist with the onboarding and retention of newly deposited incoming MSW students. The Student Onboarding Assistant will engage with outreach, welcome students, guide students through the registration process, and assist with problem-solving.  The Student Support Specialist will also help assign students to an academic advisor in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academics Programs.  This is a part-time position, 19-hour per week (or less, depending upon demand for advisement sessions). This position will be remote.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Email and phone outreach-welcoming assigned, newly deposited MSW students
  • Host Zoom meetings with newly deposited MSW students for the purpose of
    • Answer questions
    • Review student’s plan of study/roadmap and make adjustments to accommodate student’s available schedule
  • Guide students through the registration process:
  • Resolve any barriers to registration or barriers to YU services
  • Reduce attrition rate of newly deposited students (ie “melt”)
  • Guide students who decide to defer admission and provide follow-up outreach
  • Refer students to available YU and WSSW services:
  • Office of Student Finances
  • Library Services
  • Writing Center
  • Counseling Center
  • Disability Services and to review plans of study (roadmaps)
  • Confirm “warm handoff” to assigned Academic Advisor with Associate Dean following completion of the first-semester registration process
  • Report any student concerns to Student Support Specialist/Associate Dean for Academic Programs
  • Consult with Associate Dean and/or Dean regarding any legal or financial issues

Experience & Educational Background:

  • MSW required

Skills & Competencies:

  • Must possess enthusiasm for social work education and be an adept problem solver.
  • Must demonstrate good judgment, initiative, and attention to detail.
  • Must possess strong customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Must be skilled at Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. May use other Microsoft programs as assigned.
