| Position Summary: |
The Director of Clinical Systems serves as the dental school’s subject matter expert for clinical information systems, with institutional responsibility for ensuring their effective use in support of patient care, clinical education, and student assessment. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Dental Education, this role provides oversight of the configuration, optimization, and governance of clinical systems to ensure accurate clinical documentation, efficient workflows, and reliable data to support teaching, supervision, and evaluation in the clinical environment.
The Director leverages clinical software platforms to improve operational efficiency, manage patient records, and standardize clinical documentation practices, while ensuring compliance with privacy, security, and regulatory requirements. Working in close collaboration with the Director of Clinic, faculty leadership, and IT, the Director aligns clinical system functionality with curricular objectives, clinical operations, and institutional priorities, ensuring that technology effectively supports high-quality, patient-centered care and robust clinical training. |
| Position Responsibilities: |
- Clinical Systems and Informatics Leadership: Serve as the Director of Clinical Informatics for the dental school, providing strategic and operational oversight of clinical information systems used in patient care and clinical education, including the dental EHR and related platforms.
- Clinical Systems Management: Oversee the configuration, implementation, optimization, and ongoing management of clinical systems to ensure they effectively support teaching clinics, faculty supervision, student assessment, and patient care delivery.
- Data Integrity, Coding, and Compliance: Ensure accurate and consistent clinical documentation, including proper use of ADA procedure codes, treatment planning, and linkage of clinical data to patient records. Maintain compliance with HIPAA, institutional policies, and data security standards.
- Workflow Optimization and Clinical Informatics: Lead the analysis and improvement of clinical workflows through system design and configuration, guiding faculty, staff, and students in the effective use of EHR workflows to improve efficiency, documentation quality, and patient experience.
- Training, Calibration, and User Support: Develop and deliver structured training and ongoing support for faculty, staff, and students on clinical system functionality, including charting, imaging, clinical notes, and workflow use, ensuring consistent and standardized system utilization across clinics.
- System Integration and Technology Alignment: Collaborate with IT and clinical leadership to ensure seamless integration of the clinical systems with imaging platforms such as Dexis, academic technologies, and emerging tools, including AI-supported clinical or imaging solutions.
- Quality Assurance, Reporting, and Analytics: Develop and maintain reports and dashboards to monitor clinical activity, student clinical experiences, documentation quality, and performance metrics in support of quality improvement, academic review, and accreditation requirements.
- Vendor and Stakeholder Management: Serve as the primary liaison with clinical system vendors, manage system upgrades and issue resolution, and ensure technology solutions align with clinical, educational, and institutional priorities.

| Experience & Education Background: |
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Health Informatics, Healthcare Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of five years of experience in clinical systems management, clinical informatics, or clinical application support within a healthcare setting.
- Hands-on experience with dental or ambulatory electronic health record systems, including clinical charting, treatment planning, and workflow configuration.
- Demonstrated experience training clinicians, faculty, staff, or students on clinical systems and supporting day-to-day system use.
- Working knowledge of clinical documentation standards, ADA procedure coding, and management of patient clinical records.
- Experience supporting clinical workflows and system optimization in a multi-user clinical environment.
- Familiarity with healthcare data privacy and security requirements, including HIPAA.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in health informatics, Information Systems, Public Health, or a related discipline.
- Experience with Dentrix Ascend or Axium in a dental clinical or academic setting.
- Experience integrating clinical systems with imaging platforms such as Dexis and other related clinical technologies.
- Prior experience in an academic dental clinic or teaching health center environment.
- Experience supporting system integrations with advanced tools, including AI-enabled clinical or imaging solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to support clinical education through system configuration, reporting, and workflow alignment.

- Training, Support, and User Enablement: Demonstrated ability to provide practical, role-based training and ongoing technical support to faculty, staff, and students, enabling effective and consistent use of clinical systems.
- Workflow Analysis and System Optimization: Ability to analyze clinical workflows, identify inefficiencies, and apply system configuration or process adjustments to improve usability, documentation quality, and operational efficiency.
- Technical Problem-Solving: Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose system issues, resolve user problems, and coordinate with IT or vendors when escalation is required.
- Project Execution and Coordination: Experience supporting system implementations, upgrades, and enhancements, including testing, documentation, and go-live support, while coordinating with multiple stakeholders.
- Collaboration and Communication: Effective interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with clinicians, clinic operations, IT teams, and academic administrators.
- Commitment to Quality and Continuous Improvement: Consistent focus on improving system performance, documentation practices, and user experience to support high-quality patient care and effective clinical training.
