Position Summary:      

The Head of Access & Circulation supervises all aspects of access and circulation in the Law Library, including lending materials, delivering materials to faculty, inter-library loan, addressing access issues, creating policy, stacks maintenance, and managing staff. Working closely with the Assistant Director of Access & Collection, this position develops policy and procedures, trains and supervises full-time staff and student workers, and administers collections projects to maintain a functional library collection and space.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manages the day-to-day of the Law Library’s access and circulation services and staff, including scheduling and staffing the circulation desk, lending materials, inter-library loan, addressing access issues, creating policy, stacks maintenance, and supervising staff
  • Provides leadership, supervision, and training for full-time staff and student workers
  • Participates in strategic planning for Law Library with an emphasis on access and circulation services
  • Proposes, implements, and evaluates current access and circulation services using data, as well as recommends innovative services and enhancements to library services
  • Develops, implements, and maintains an ongoing stacks maintenance plan for all library collections, including reshelving and shifting
  • Prioritizes multiple tasks and works productively in a team environment.
  • Schedules coverage for the circulation desk by full-time staff and student workers
  • Staffs the circulation desk and provides support for others staffing the circulation desk
  • Remains current on best practices, emerging trends, and developments related to access and circulation as relevant to the Law Library
  • Qualified candidates holding a J.D. teach two sections of the required one-credit Advanced Legal Research course per academic year
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned

This position interacts closely with other library staff, faculty, students, and other law school staff. The position manages at least one full-time employee and at least 5 student workers.

Experience & Educational Background:

  • Required qualifications:
    • Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or foreign equivalent
    • At least one year of access or circulation services experience
    • At least one year of people management experience in any context
  • Preferred qualifications:
    • Juris Doctor (J.D.) or foreign equivalent
    • Legal research instruction experience

Skills & Competencies:

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve challenges and develop innovative solutions and strategies
  • Demonstrated customer service skills, including adaptability, active listening, conflict resolution, effective communication, and patience
  • Managing access, circulation, and inter-library loan issues in a mid-sized library
  • Intermediate skill level for Microsoft Word. Beginner skill level for Microsoft Excel
  • Advanced knowledge of circulation features of integrated library systems, especially FOLIO and Panorama/Tableau
  • Working knowledge of library technology, including computers, printers, and scanners
  • Demonstrated project management skills that involve taking a project from inception through implementation to completion
  • Adheres to ethical standards and integrity in decision-making and professional interactions
  • Working in a collaborative and collegial space
  • Building and managing diverse relationships within the library and law school
  • Leading teams, embracing change, and fostering innovation
  • Robust organizational abilities, including scheduling
  • Effective communication skills (listening, speaking, and writing)
