This position is a grade 13 with a minimum of $47,571 and midpoint of $63,428. Salary offer will be commensurate with the education/experience, in alignment with the College’s compensation philosophy, and the current CBA, if applicable.

Job Summary:

An employee in this classification performs work of moderate difficulty providing advanced technical support for Elgin Community College theater productions and events, including programming and design of theatrical lighting and audio. Work is distinguished by overseeing and leading the overall organization and maintenance of lighting and audio equipment and production facilities.   General supervision is received from the assigned manager.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of four years’ experience as a theatrical lighting or audio technician or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  2. Considerable knowledge of all facets of theatrical lighting and audio, especially in the area of plot hang, equipment uses, programing and maintenance.
  3. Good knowledge of all facets of theatrical carpentry, especially in the area of rigging and scenery tool equipment use.
  4. Considerable skill in organizing work to meet established deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  5. Considerable skill in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite, including but not limited to Word, Excel, Access and Publisher
  6. Working skill in interpersonal interaction to be applied to a variety of individuals with differing education, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
  7. Working skills in verbal and written communication.
  8. Working skill in operating a personal computer, applicable software and peripheral equipment as well as learning and adapting to new and updated programs and technology.
  9. Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends when required by the department’s needs.

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Good knowledge of technical production and performance aspects of theatre.
  2. Good knowledge of theatrical audio systems and setups.
  3. Some knowledge of OSHA codes and safety regulations.
  4. Some knowledge of programing and safe use of theatrical atmospherics during productions.
  5. Some knowledge of the programing and maintenance of current LED & intelligent lighting instruments.
  6. Working skills in computer-aided drafting programs.
  7. Working skills in theatrical electrical systems.
  8. May require a valid Illinois driver’s license.

Essential Duties:

  1. Responsible for the programing and operation of the lighting and audio console, assisting any guest artists or lighting designers in facilitating their needs, setup and function of any practical’s or special effects requested, and the troubleshooting and maintenance of all theatrical lighting used during all rental events.
  2. Perform all duties related to the setup of lighting or audio for the theatrical productions such as; consulting with visiting artists and designers, plot reviews, construction and function of any practical’s or special effects, light hang, circuiting, board programing, focus, troubleshoot lighting or audio equipment issues during rehearsals and performance run, operation of the lighting console as needed, and the tear-down of all light fixtures used at the end of the performance run.
  3. Maintain and update all repertoire lighting plots. Maintain cleanliness and safety of all lighting and sound work spaces. Perform all needed yearly maintenance and repair of all lighting and sound equipment. Work with manufacture technicians during onsite equipment repairs.
  4. Maintain the storage and inventory of all lighting and audio equipment and associated media, assist with ordering supplies and equipment needed for replacement and repair, and work with Production Manager on recommendations for new equipment and updates to systems to stay up to date as technology advances.
  5. Assist in training of Theater Technicians who are assigned lighting or audio related job duties during their work day.
  6. Construct, set-up, paint and tear down sets for all productions within the ECC theaters and other events, as assigned. Load and unload scenery and equipment.  Handle rigging to move equipment, sets, etc. for productions. May use a truck and/or other machines to deliver/remove scenery and equipment.

  3. Operate audio board during rehearsals, techs and performances.
  4. Other duties as assigned that pertain to the job description
  5. Ability to work a flexible schedule which includes days/evenings/weekends as needed by the department.
  6. Safely operate a manlift or scissor lift during work calls
  7. Use fall protection equipment and system when working at height in catwalks
