JOB TITLE: DIRECTOR OF TUTORING & LEARNING CENTERS DEPARTMENT: SPECKMAN TLC
SALARY RANGE: $75,000 - $85,000 FLSA: EXEMPT
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs
SCHEDULE DETAILS: Full-time (may require work outside normal work hours)/12 month position/PSRS
Position Summary
The Director of the Tutoring & Learning Center (TLC), Carol Jones Writing Center (CJWC), and Speech Communications Center (SCC) is primarily responsible for the long-term planning, daily operations, and oversight of online and on-site tutoring, coaching, and academic workshops. The Director promotes and delivers high quality tutoring and academic supports, manages departmental budgets, and supervises full-time, part-time, and work-study staff. The Director will work closely with the Assistant Director and other learning center staff to provide services that seek to improve student outcomes. Additional responsibilities include acting as the Department Chair for CAC-101 class.
Essential Job Duties
- Provide strategic leadership and management for the TLC, CJWC, and SCC.
- Responsible for managing the departmental budget and ensuring fiscally responsible and innovative long-range planning related to Learning Center facilities, collection, and services.
- Ensure the goals, priorities, and activities of the department are fully aligned with those of the College through completion of the College’s annual planning process.
- Recruit, interview, hire, train, mentor, schedule, and evaluate staff and ensure the quality delivery of their services.
- Oversee and evaluate the College’s Academic Early Alert Program (AEA) to ensure at-risk students are receiving additional high quality and individualized academic supports.
- Facilitate on-site and remote tutor training activities to provide consistency of services between campuses by collaborating with individuals employed at all OTC campuses and locations.
- Ensure compliance with accreditation and certification requirements.
- Serve as chair of TLC advisory committee.
- Represent the department in a professional manner at College councils, committees, taskforces, and at appropriate area, state, regional, and/or national conferences and organizations.
- Collaborate with Department Chairs, Program Directors, Faculty, and other institutional stakeholders to create and maintain innovative programs and best practices that seek to improve student success rates.
- Work with the Institutional Research department to utilize assessment and evaluation data that informs best practices, program modifications, and adaptations.
- Oversee regular updates and maintenance to the department’s web page(s).
- Facilitate meetings, trainings, and manage employee and student issues.
- Actively participates in continued professional development to remain current on best practices in improving student learning outcomes for both theory and practice.
- Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality.
- Prepare an OTC annual planning report and budget request.
- Comply with college policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including attending college functions, serving on committees, and attending community events.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
- Three years of leadership experience in higher education, including leadership in the successful planning and implementation of innovative programs or policies.
- Three years of experience in and knowledge of tutoring best practices.
- Knowledge of best practices in staff recruitment, hiring processes, training, evaluating, and supervising.
- Valid Missouri Driver’s License and reliable vehicle (for travel to all OTC campuses and locations).
- Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service.
- Ability to work without direct supervision and able to use discretion to determine the need for escalated administrative involvement.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to use information technology for professional productivity (such as TutorTrac, Sign-Up Genius, Microsoft Office Suite, and other related programs).
Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Two years of experience with instruction and training of diverse learners.
- Two years of experience developing and presenting tutor training activities.
- Two years’ experience teaching in a college setting.
- Individual certification through ICLCA or equivalent.
- Experience in strategic planning and program review.
- 18+ Hours towards a terminal degree related to higher education.
- Experience with Colleague.
- Experience working within a collegiate setting.

Environment: Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with frequent interruptions and distractions. Requires extended periods of time viewing computer monitor or standing; may require adjustment of schedule to include some evening and/or weekends; may encounter occasional exposure to inclement weather during travel.
Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard.
