Department Overview:

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses.

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Program Description:

MSCR’s Fascination Station Day Camps are half-day programs providing in-depth exposure to specific topics in a fun, enriching environment. Camps are designed to provide a variety of fascinating choices for campers. Individual camp structures vary based on the nature of the program, but generally include small group activities developing continuity throughout the week. Some themes may include special presenters or a field trip.

Job Description & Duties:

Fuel your passion for learning and inspire elementary aged kids at Fascination Station Day Camps! Our half-day programs dive deep into captivating topics, sparking curiosity and fostering exploration. Create engaging activities and make a difference in kids’ lives this summer! We’re looking for leaders with experience in lesson planning and facilitating theme based activities. energetic leaders to guide campers, inspire new interests, and be positive role models. We seek enthusiastic, team-players with classroom management skills.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for lesson planning and facilitating activities based on weekly themes including: Things with Wings; Top Secret Agent Camp; Boom, Pop, Splat!; Where the Wild Things Are; Creative Constructions; Camp with Character; Fairy Tales, Folklore and Fables; Fantastic Foods and Where to Find Them.
Develop and plan safe, fun, age-appropriate and engaging lesson plans to fill 2½-3 hours each day for campers.
Adapt/modify all lesson plans to meet the needs of all campers.
Responsible for active supervision of ALL CAMPERS AT ALL TIMES.
Responsible for helping with implementation of program, managing transitions, filling in time with kids, supervising during drop off/pick up.
Manage group and participant behaviors, address behavior issues as they arise.
Track participants throughout the day, maintain sight and sound supervision of all participants.
Assist with camp maintenance (cleanliness, organization, etc.) and administrative tasks as needed (attendance, communication with families, etc.).
Ensure all campers’ safety.
Create enthusiastic, engaging, and inclusive environment for campers.
Engage in all camp activities.

Program Dates:

Mandatory Staff Training: June 13, 16-18, 20. No training 6/19.
Camp Dates: 6/23-8/15 (NO CAMP on 7/4. )

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Qualifications:

    1+ years’ experience working with youth from diverse backgrounds in a day camp or education setting.
    1+ years’ experience creating lesson and activity plans for elementary aged kids
    Must be creative & enthusiastic.
    Must be available for mandatory training June 13, 16-18, 20.
    Flexibility and ability to adapt to schedule changes, weather, etc.
    Interest in learning about a wide range of enrichment and STEAM topics with participants.
    Staff must be able to engage with campers for every activity and maintain enthusiasm.
    Dependability, teamwork and enthusiasm required.

  • Preferred Qualifications:

    Early education experience (classwork, professional) and lesson/programming experience.
    Bilingual Spanish a plus.
    American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR and First Aid certification desired.
    Lifeguard certification a plus.
