Department Overview:

The Mad City Aqua Stars is Madison’s only competitve artistic swimming team. Athletes aged 8 to 18, from throughout Dane County, compete at state, regional, and national meets. We also have a recreational team, which practices weekly and performs at our annual spring showcase. 

We practice at Middleton High School pool and West High School pool throughout the season.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Mission Statement

To encourage our athletes to be responsible, respectful citizens and team members and leaders through artistic swimming (formerly known as symchronized swimming). Our program emphasizes the development of technical, physical and mental ability through creative and challenging movement in and out of the water. 

General Information

Our regular season starts in late August and ends in the last week of May. Our competitive teams participate in meets in Wisconsin from October through May, roughly once per month. Our teams are formed by age and experience level. We are a no-cut team. Our coaches have selection criteria for each level of competition: novice, intermediate, and age group. 

Coaches’ Responsibilities: 

  • Supervise the safe, efficient and effective operation of practices. 
  • Coach and instruct participants on techniques and skills needed to compete in meets and perform in the showcase. 
  • Maintain a positive atmosphere at practice that is conducive to a good instructional program. 
  • Organize and direct team practices. Maintain discipline and control of the team members during practice sessions, meets and shows. 
  • Develop positive attitudes and motivate team members through team meetings, goal setting and individual swimmer counseling. 

Qualifications:

Swim or stroke coaching or lifeguarding experience required, artistic swimming experience preferred. Will be required to take and pass Certified Coaching Levels through USAS, as well as Safe Sport Athlete Abuse Prevention Training. All associated fees paid by club.

Physical Demands

Move on pool deck during practice as needed to supervise athletes on deck and in the water, bend, lift up to 20# of equipment. Speak loudly enough to be heard in the pool environment.
