World BEYOND War is an organization that aims to create a global movement to abolish the institution of war itself – not limited to any particular group or war. It seeks to take war off the table as a viable option, replacing it with a global security system that is supported by international law, diplomacy, collaboration, and human rights – and defending these ideals with non-violent action, rather than the threat of violence.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Organizing interns will organize on campus against war, through in-person outreach and events, hosting regular student anti-war meetings, and working with other students to build the movement. Organizing interns will have the opportunity for training and mentorship to build their skills in community organizing.

Hours: 5-10 hours per week. Hours are flexible and self-monitored. Academic holidays are observed. All activities are paused during the final exam and commencement periods.

Optional Stipend: $20/ hour, paid monthly based on student’s tracking of their hours. We will offer both unpaid and paid internships. Paid interns work as independent contractors. Students can also opt to use the internship to fulfill academic requirements, for instance in the La Follette School of Public Affairs.

Oversight: This position reports to and is supported by the Chapter Coordinators of Madison for a World BEYOND War.

Main Responsibilities

  • Plan and carry out educational, advocacy, and activist events at UW-Madison, Madison College and/or Edgewood College

  • Follow up with students who express interest in war abolition work, welcoming them and helping them become activists and leaders

  • Plan and facilitate regular student anti-war meetings of the World BEYOND War registered student organization at UW-Madison or the Wolfpack BEYOND War club at Madison College

  • Engage wider audiences by tabling in prominent places and at events on campus, generating media coverage, and engaging in public speaking & media appearances

  • Meet regularly with the WBW campus team which includes faculty and staff sponsors, Madison for a World BEYOND War chapter members, and activists from other antiwar organizations

  • Help grow Madison for a WBW’s Action Network mobile & e-mail contact list and Instagram page

  • Recruit and involve future organizing interns

Additional Responsibilities

  • Meet and communicate regularly with WBW chapter coordinators

  • Write a short monthly report, submitted to the WBW chapter coordinators

Agreement Modifications: If circumstances change during the semester, a reduction in hours can be arranged. Should the student find that the agreed upon expectations require more than a 10-hour weekly commitment, adjustments to the description can be made in conversation with the Chapter Coordinators. World BEYOND War encourages students to monitor workloads, seek help with time management and notify the WBW Chapter Coordinators for additional support. We want students to feel energized and empowered by their organizing work.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Student at UW-Madison, Madison College, or Edgewood College

  • Good oral and written English-language communications skills 

  • Alignment with World BEYOND War’s mission to end all war and establish a just and sustainable peace

Additional Qualifications

  • Experience in organizing, mobilizing, and direct action

  • Experience in planning & facilitating organizational meetings

  • Strong public speaking background

  • Knowledge of major global conflicts and arguments for peace

  • Fluency in other languages is an asset
