Department Overview: | Achievement Connections is a partnership between United Way of Dane County, the Madison Metropolitan School District and the UW-Madison Morgridge Center for Public Service. Together, we mobilize the community to support student achievement in algebra and geometry, by:
- Training and placing math tutors in these local school districts. Even if math’s not your strongest subject, we give you the tools and knowledge you need to succeed.
- Pairing students with a tutor for at least an entire semester, if not an entire year.
- Supporting AmeriCorps members with a team of volunteers and school staff, empowering them to work together and wrap around the content and the methods they’re using in class.
AmeriCorps is the federal agency for national service – providing opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds to serve their country, address the nation’s most pressing challenges to improve lives, strengthen communities and foster civic engagement through service. Our AmeriCorps members serve through United Way of Dane County during a 10-month service term and are placed directly within our partner high schools.

POSITION TITLE: AmeriCorps Member - Tutor Coordinator & Math Tutor

Achievement Connections is an AmeriCorps program with five math tutoring centers at local high schools. Led by a team of AmeriCorps members and volunteers with support from program and school staff, these tutoring centers provide one-on-one support to a diverse set of students striving to improve in Algebra 1 and Geometry. Together with our partners, we aim to help students graduate, and in doing so, help close opportunity gaps to make Dane County a better place to live.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Collaborate with school staff to provide math tutoring support aimed at improving the academic achievement and graduation rates of algebra and geometry students in high-need schools. Participate in a widespread community collaboration coordinated by the United Way of Dane County, in partnership with Madison Metropolitan School District, AmeriCorps*State, and other partners.
50% TUTOR COORDINATION
- Collaborate with school staff to identify the Algebra and Geometry tutoring needs of your assigned school.
- Coordinate the scheduling and matching of students with tutors.
- Assist with the recruitment, training, orientation, and placement of tutors at your assigned school and preparation of tutoring sessions.
- Provide ongoing communication, support and in-service training for the tutors you supervise.
- Track tutoring and volunteer hours at your assigned school, and complete weekly tutoring data and quarterly reports.
- Implement evaluation tools for assessing the success of tutoring efforts.
- Utilize feedback from tutors, program participants, and staff to enhance tutor management practices.
- Collaborate with program and school staff to develop, record and institute standard tutor management practices for your school.
30% MATH TUTORING
- Tutor a selected group of students at your assigned school.
- Provide classroom support to Algebra and Geometry courses
- Prepare for tutoring sessions including incorporation of program tutoring tools and development of tutoring resources and skills worksheets.
20% TRAINING, MEETINGS, AND PROGRAM ACTIVITIES
- Participate in extensive orientation at beginning of service.
- Participate in required training, including tutor management, math tutoring and topics related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Support program-wide activities, including weekly team meetings and bi-monthly team training.
- Frequent opportunities for networking with fellow AmeriCorps members and supervisors.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to effectively develop and navigate varied partnerships among school staff, students, and community volunteers.
- Ability to build relationships with students and school staff.
- Adaptability and problem solving in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong time management skills and ability to multitask.
- Willingness to engage in ongoing learning, training and professional development.
- Commitment to service and the goals of Achievement Connections.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Must be U.S. Citizen or have permanent resident status, per AmeriCorps regulations.
- Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check.
