Department Overview:

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses. 

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Program Description: 

MSCR Offers Middle School Programming for all Middle Schools in The Madison Metropolitan School District. This includes after school sports at each MSCR site. Our programs focus on creating a positive and inclusive environment where kids of all skill levels can thrive and build lifelong skills.

Job Description & Duties: 

The Sports Coach is responsible for teaching sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethic, personal responsibility, and competitiveness to all student-athletes. The coach will also enforce district and department behavioral and academic expectations of student-athletes. The coach is required to engage in academic monitoring with teachers, and other academic support staff. Middle School Sports offerings include: Boy’s & Girl’s Basketball, Flag Football, Soccer and Volleyball.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • The Sports Coach must have the highly important quality of patience with middle school students
  • Knowledge of the sport
  • Serve as a positive role model to the players and parents
  • Teach skills through effectively planned practices at the level appropriate for each member of the team
  • Ability to understand student’s strengths and weaknesses, and promote and maintain motivation in those that they work with
  • Willingness to attend coaches meetings offered by MSCR
  • The ability to work well with children of various ages
  • Willing to learn and follow district rules and guidelines regarding youth sports

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Prior coaching experience is helpful but not required
  • Previous youth work experience
  • Previous experience coaching sports
