Department Overview:

Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) is Madison’s public recreation provider. MSCR offers a wide variety of athletic, recreational, arts and enrichment activities and classes for all ages in an accessible, inclusive setting. Programs include swimming instruction, MSCR on the Move, arts & enrichment classes, youth summer camps, sports camps & clinics, adult & 50+ fitness, adult sport leagues including pickleball, softball and tennis, and a wide variety of outdoor pursuits including paddling sports, pontoon trips, camping, orienteering and challenge courses. 

As a department of the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), MSCR also provides afterschool enrichment activities, clubs and sports as well as summer programming in Madison elementary, middle and high schools, Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center. Afterschool clubs and sports include: arts & enrichment, homework/academic clubs, drama, dance, skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, cross country and much more!

Program Description:

Job Description & Duties: 

Assist the Community Programs and Camps Specialist in supporting and coordinating two summer day camps for elementary and middle school-aged youth. The Field Supervisor helps shape the camp experience for over 390 summer campers! Primary duties include supervising and evaluating part-time staff, assisting with staff training, managing supplies, customer service, program marketing and general program support. This position also includes assisting camps when staff is unavailable and providing support to camp Site Directors during the camp day.

Start Date: ASAP

Program Dates:
• Now-May 18, 2026: Camp Preparation (up to 20hrs/wk)
• May 18- Jun 6, 2026: Seasonal Director Training (20-40 hrs/wk)
• June 7-20, 2026: Mandatory paid training (40 hrs/wk)
• June 22 - Aug 14, 2026: Summer Camp Program (40 hrs/wk)
• Aug 17-21, 2026: Camp clean up and wrap up (20 hrs/wk)
• Staff Meeting: Every Monday from 5-6pm and every Tuesday from 7:45am-8:45am. 

Work Location: Varies; office location at MSCR Central 328 E. Lakeside St and camp locations throughout the Madison area.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Previous experience in education, camp programming (day and/or overnight), general K-8 youth programming, or recreation program coordination.
• Detail-oriented and have strong organizational, communication and computer skills, including proficiency in: Google Suite and Microsoft Word.
• Previous supervisory experience and proven reliability and dependability.
• CPR/AED and First Aid certified or willing to be certified
• At least two summers of camp experience working at an overnight or day camp
• Experience leading activities and managing group dynamics with elementary and middle school-aged children
• Experience in planning/facilitating activities and events for youth and adults
• Access to a car to travel to various camp locations and field trips
• Willingness to be flexible and adjust to the unexpected needs of camp

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bilingual in Spanish
• Knowledge, education and/or passion for outdoor activities
• Experience supervising a staff group
• Experience coaching and mentoring staff
• Experience running or leading an interview
• Lifeguard Certification

Application Instructions:

Applicants must be available to attend training and meetings beginning May 18. Some training takes place in the evenings. Applicants must be able to work until the end of the camp season (August 14th minimum, preferably until August 21). Directors typically work 4-10-hour days during the summer and have 1 full day off during the week (plus weekends).
