The Wisconsin Union, often referred to as "the heart and soul" of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has enhanced the lives of members and visitors since it was founded in 1907. Since 1928, when the doors to Memorial Union opened, the Wisconsin Union has served as the living room of the UW-Madison campus. The Union connects students, faculty, staff, members and visitors through shared cultural, social and recreational events and experiences.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

For students with an interest in marketing, data analysis, business, or related fields and a curiosity about how organizations build and sustain member relationships.

 

Position Summary

The Membership Intern supports the Wisconsin Union in advancing a comprehensive member engagement strategy that spans acquisition, onboarding, engagement, and stewardship. This role contributes to building meaningful, lifelong connections between members, alumni, and the Union.

Working closely with the Member and Alumni Experience team, the intern will assist with membership communications, data tracking, and event execution—helping translate strategy into action across key touchpoints in the member journey.

This internship offers hands-on experience in membership strategy within a large, mission-driven organization, with exposure to cross-functional collaboration across marketing, programming, and advancement.

  • Assist in the preparation and execution of donor events, including outreach, logistics, and follow-up communications.
  • Manage acknowledgements for Wisconsin Union donors and collaborate with fellow development staff to ensure proper donor stewardship.
  • Support the creation and implementation of fundraising campaigns (annual giving, endowment, special initiatives).
  • Process Terrace Paver and Wisconsin Union Theater seat sales, and assist in mapping of materials.
  • Conduct research on potential donors and alumni to identify giving opportunities.
  • Maintain and update donor records in the fundraising database.
  • Assist in drafting and editing donor communications, including thank-you notes, event invitations, and campaign materials.
  • Support the planning and coordination of fundraising events, including virtual and in-person formats.
  • Attend and participate in team meetings, offering insights and ideas related to fundraising strategies.
  • Perform other administrative duties related to fundraising operations as needed.
  • Answer questions from customers, and provide exceptional service.
  • Staff stewardship events as needed.
  • Special projects as assigned.

Relevant Work Experience:

  • Customer service experience and ability to interact with a wide variety of people
  • Organizational and task management skills required along with a strong work ethic and ability to work as part of a team and independently
  • Conducting online research
  • Administrative office support preferred and high-level proficiency with MS Office and/or G Suite Familiarity or experience with
  • Constant Contact and complex databases is a plus
  • Project management experience is a plus

 

Student Status

To be eligible for the Wisconsin Union positions, you must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or highschool (at least 16). It is not permissible to hire a person as a student hourly employee if they are taking credits merely to be eligible for student hourly employment.
