Department Overview:

The Wisconsin Crop Improvement Association (WCIA) is responsible for seed certification throughout Wisconsin by providing third party inspection, interviewing, and seed testing services. Founded in 1901 as a not-for-profit corporation through the efforts of University of Wisconsin (UW) Madison faculty, WCIA continues to collaborate in both the public and private sectors throughout cultivar development, evaluation, and commercialization.

Schedule:

Schedule starts light and increases in intensity as the season progresses. Some late days and a couple weekend days may be required during peak season (mid-late July). Inspectors report their own hours, milage, and expenses. Submission of data and daily planning can be done from home.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Wisconsin Crop Improvement Association (WCIA) is seeking seasonal Field Inspectors for the 2026 summer crop season in Central Wisconsin, including Dane, Adams, Waushara, Marquette, Juneau, Sauk, and Columbia Counties.

Field Inspectors travel to seed production fields to collect data, evaluate crop development, and work with producers to help ensure high-quality seed production standards are met.

Position Details

  • Seasonal employment: June–August 2026
  • Flexible schedule: 20–40 hours/week
  • Pay: $16/hour + 72.5¢/mile reimbursement
  • Outdoor, independent work environment
  • Training provided

Responsibilities

  • Walk and inspect agricultural seed production fields
  • Collect and report field data accurately
  • Communicate professionally with seed producers and WCIA staff
  • Travel independently to assigned field locations
  • Complete inspections in a timely manner

Preferred Skills

  • Interest in agriculture, agronomy, biology, environmental science, or related fields
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions

Minimum Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to walk through fields for extended periods
  • Dependable and self-motivated
  • Must be at least 18 years old

This position is ideal for students seeking hands-on agricultural experience and flexible summer employment.

Qualifications:

Own transportation is required.

Must be able to walk many miles in a week in seed production fields. 

Agriculture or Life Sciences background is recommended.

Madison, Janesville, or Central Wisconsin based is ideal.
