Department Overview: | The Wisconsin Union, often referred to as "the heart and soul" of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has enhanced the lives of members and visitors since it was founded in 1907. Since 1928, when the doors to Memorial Union opened, the Wisconsin Union has served as the living room of the UW-Madison campus. The Union connects students, faculty, staff, members and visitors through shared cultural, social and recreational events and experiences.

Schedule: | Wheelhouse Studios is open everyday from 12pm to 10pm; Programming needs and internship hours may be different from regular open studio hours. Schedule will be determined by program need and selected candidate's availability.

Anticipated Schedule
The role is for both Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters. While the hours worked per week may vary, the position is limited to a total of ~100 hours of work.

Position Summary/Job Duties: | Wheelhouse Studio’s School of Education Intern will work closely with the Program Coordinator to support arts programming, event planning, communications, and studio operations as needed. This position is ideal for students interested in arts education, community engagement, creative programming, and developing professional experience within an arts organization. Responsibilities include:
- Supporting event planning and execution through setup, material preparation, facilitation, documentation, and cleanup
- Helping with general studio and program needs as they arise
- Collaborating with the Program Coordinator on creative, student-centered programming and engagement ideas
- Bringing their own interests and skills by identifying opportunities to contribute to Wheelhouse Studios in other meaningful ways
This position is a collaboration between the Wisconsin Union and the School of Education. The role is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to actively practice what they learn in class within a professional setting.

Qualifications: | Joint internship with School of Education

Artistic & Technical Skills
- Basic knowledge of multiple art mediums (painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, digital art, etc.)
- Ability to demo simple art techniques for beginners
Event & Leadership Skills
- Experience leading group activities, workshops, or peer-to-peer teaching
- Strong public speaking and facilitation skills
- Ability to adapt activities for different ages, skill levels, and group sizes
- Comfort with guiding both structured lessons and open-ended creative sessions
Organizational & Professional Skills
- Dependability and strong time management (able to prep materials and set up/clean up spaces)
- Flexibility and problem-solving skills during live events
- Attention to detail with studio policies (safety, equipment use, cleanup procedures)
Interpersonal Skills
- Enthusiasm for art and creating an inclusive, welcoming environment
- Ability to engage participants with warmth and encouragement
- Team-oriented attitude—comfortable collaborating with staff, faculty, and fellow interns
- Sensitivity to diverse cultural and creative perspectives
Other Helpful Qualifications
- Experience working with children, teens, or college students in creative settings
Applicants must have a declared major in the School of Education student to qualify for this internship. Art and Art Education majors highly recommended to apply.
This position is for 2026-2027 academic year: Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 semesters.
Student Status
To be eligible for the Wisconsin Union positions, you must be currently enrolled in a college, university, or highschool (at least 16). It is not permissible to hire a person as a student hourly employee if they are taking credits merely to be eligible for student hourly employment. Review UW Policy 5003- Student Hourly Employment for more information. If school is in break period (summer, spring, winter), applicants must intend to enroll in courses the following semester.
