Oner of the patient's goals was to make the necessity of her progressive needs of care be something that could contribute to the education of pre-health professionals, as the dream when younger was to become an educator. The primary care doctor refers to the set up we have here as a one patient "step-down" ICU".  This is not a job for simple companionship or getting your homework done as the team members are constantly busy, but busy with tasks and reading related to the illness and treatment that enhances their development.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

If you have trouble opening this related to technical difficulties please send a message to thowell@wisc.edu. This is an outstanding  opportunity for pre-health professional UW students seeking an interesting caregiver job. We’re seeking two caregivers to start training – one in early September and one in mid to late fall – who can commit to a minimum of at least one year (through fall 2027) inclusive of summer (assuming the job is a great fit). Best if home base is Madison. We are located very close to the UW Hospital and several major bus lines. The pay is $17.85/hour. Requirements include someone who is a non-smoker, up-to-date on vaccines, is willing to wear an N95 while working, able to work with the standard poodle service dog, and can attend monthly team meetings on site.

You’d join a team of 8 caregivers caring for a young bedbound woman with a very complex set of interacting, genetically based illnesses that provide a great learning opportunity for those headed toward health care professions. Twenty hours of paid training is provided, and all work is under the supervision of the patient’s physician parents who were medical educators in their careers. Hours occur between 6:30AM and 9:30 PM usually divided in three shifts. In the fall your hours will be at least four in a week but later advancing to 12 hrs minimum per week. You’d learn many tasks – typically reserved for RNs – that can be done by caregivers in this highly supervised home setting. The care is structured as a culture of learning with high emphasis on teamwork. The team setup has evolved over the last decade to be one where the caregivers continue to develop knowledge and skills over the entire period of work here, advancing in leadership strengths. Schedules are developed around class demands of the group. Letters of Recommendation from this challenging job have been highly influential in team member’s getting into postgraduate programs of their choice. While later in the fall we’ll seek a few additional caregivers, we seek caregivers at this time who would plan to advance to what we’ve called “assistant team leads” after approximately six months of work on the team and who can commit through next summer and fall 2027. If interested, contact us at thowell@wisc.edu by Sept 15th 2026. Thanks!
