Position Summary/Job Duties:

The primary responsibility of this position is after-school care for our children:

  • Picking the children up from school and driving them home
  • Supervising snack, homework, and play until a parent returns home
  • Maintaining the afternoon routine and ensuring the children are safe and well cared for

The children are not occupied every minute of the afternoon, and the position also includes household responsibilities during quieter periods. We want to be clear that this is a substantive part of the role:

  • Tidying and resetting shared spaces: countertops, floors, and loading and unloading the dishwasher
  • Laundry: washing, drying, folding, and putting away
  • Helping the children keep their own spaces organized, along with general upkeep such as recycling and breaking down delivery boxes

Depending on the day, time is divided roughly evenly between childcare and household responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • Current UW-Madison student (part- or full-time)
  • Warm, patient, and attentive with children
  • Reliable, responsible, and organized, with the initiative to identify tasks without being asked
  • A valid driver's license and a good driving record (required)
  • Access to your own reliable car for school pickups (required)
  • Willingness to take on the household responsibilities described above in addition to childcare
  • Prior experience in childcare, babysitting, camps, tutoring, or household work preferred but not required

Physical Demands

Standing, walking, bending, light lifting (laundry, boxes), vacuuming, and driving for school pickups.

Application Instructions:

Please email bmutlu@wisc.edu a brief note that includes:

  • A description of your relevant experience (childcare and/or household work)
  • Confirmation that you are available Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons, and whether you can commit through the academic year
  • Confirmation that you have your own car and a good driving record
  • Two references we may contact

We are looking to fill this position promptly and will respond shortly after receiving your message.

Compensation: $24-$27 per hour depending on experience, paid biweekly by electronic transfer. End-of-semester and end-of-summer bonuses. Mileage reimbursement for driving the children. Scheduled hours are guaranteed: if we need to cancel a shift, you are still paid for that time. We are glad to provide a reference or recommendation letter after a sustained period of work.
