Position Summary/Job Duties:

Madison Modern Market—an independent, design-focused boutique on State Street in Madison, WI—is seeking part-time Sales Associates to join our small team. Our Sales Associates actively engage with customers, share their knowledge of our products, maintain creative merchandise displays, process shipments, and help keep the store running smoothly. Please note this is a hands-on retail position and not simply a cashiering job. We’re looking for people who want to work, take ownership of their responsibilities, and contribute to the success of our business.

Before applying, please note our key requirements:

  • Consistent weekend and holiday availability is essential as our busiest periods include weekends and the days surrounding holidays. We expect our teammates to be available either the days leading up to or winding down from major holidays, including Thanksgiving and Christmas.
  • A minimum of 12–15 hours of consistent weekly availability during store hours, including flexibility with weekday and weekend shifts.
  • Reliable, proactive communication. Employees must share their availability clearly, promptly report changes, and follow through on scheduling commitments.
  • A minimum six-month commitment as this is an ongoing position, not a seasonal job.

Responsibilities include:

  • Customer experience and sales. Welcome and engage customers, identify their needs, recommend products, share information about merchandise and vendors, and create a personal, memorable shopping experience.
  • Product and operational knowledge. Stay informed about merchandise, vendors, and store systems.
  • Sales transactions and accurately process purchases through our point-of-sale (POS) system.
  • Merchandising and store upkeep. Maintain a clean, organized sales floor; straighten and refresh displays; replenish sold merchandise; and restock from back stock.
  • Receiving and inventory. Assist with shipments, prepare new merchandise, and help maintain store standards.
  • Store administration and security. Assist management with opening and closing procedures, monitor for theft and product loss, follow security protocols, and maintain a safe environment in compliance with store policies and procedures.

Benefits

  • Employee discount on merchandise.
  • Access to a SIMPLE IRA retirement plan for eligible part-time.
  • Potential seasonal and performance-based raises and/or bonuses.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development.

Please apply only if you can consistently meet our scheduling needs and are prepared to communicate reliably about your availability. We value team members who show up, take initiative, and understand that every role contributes to the customer experience and the success of our store.

Qualifications:

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Customer-focused and sales-minded. Must be approachable, hospitable, proactive, and comfortable initiating conversations and helping customers make purchasing decisions.
  • Reliable and accountable. Takes work commitments seriously, communicates consistently, follows through, and takes responsibility for their performance.
  • Professional and respectful. Represents the store with integrity and maintains a positive attitude.
  • Adaptable and organized. Able to multitask, manage time effectively, work independently, and collaborate within a small team.
  • Eager to learn. Interested in developing product knowledge, retail skills, and a deeper understanding of our business. While prior experience in retail, hospitality, or customer service is preferred, we’re willing to train candidates who are open to being a dynamic part of our team.
  • Active and present. Must be able to arrive on time, ready to begin their shift, and maintain an active sales floor presence throughout their shift.
  • Creatively minded. Interest in art, design, thoughtfully curated products, and small business is a plus.

Physical Demands

Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods, lift up to 40 pounds, and use a step ladder. Must be willing to partake in general cleaning/upkeep tasks.
