Department Overview:

The International Studies (IS) Major is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program situated within the UW-Madison International Division. At the core of the International Studies major is a fundamental recognition that the world outside of the United States, and the Global North, matters. In International Studies, we seek to understand not only how global forces are impacting nations, communities, and individuals, but also how different forces are reshaping the globe while impacting each other. This leads to the major's emphasis on the way that global challenges such as poverty, insecurity, mental health, and climate change are intertwined. Our team of faculty, staff, and instructors work collaboratively across the International Division and the UW-Madison campus to holistically support our students' personal, academic, and professional development, We value and uplift the unique perspectives, lived experiences, and identities our students bring to our program.

Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications: Declared International Studies Major in good academic standing.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Be able to balance a full-time semester course load and 8+ hours of Peer Advisor work per week.
• Be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Adhere to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines.
• Possess attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
• Have strong intercultural and written communication skills.
• Be able to learn new skills quickly.
• Be familiar with Facebook and other social media platforms
• Be friendly, timely, able to learn, and interested in helping with new tasks.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Responsibilities will include the following:
Work with the International Studies Major (ISM) and the Institute for Regional and International Studies (IRIS) to provide friendly, professional, and timely office and student support that includes, but is not limited to, the following tasks:
• Independently hold regular drop-in advising hours, and weekly Intro to the IS Major workshops. Advising can include, but is not limited to, the following tasks:
o Course selection and four-year planning
o Study Abroad exploration
o Adding/Dropping major(s) / certificates(s)
o Running a Degree Audit Report (DARS) and reviewing information with students
• Respond to email inquiries sent to IS Major Advisor account
• Greet office guests and provide front desk support
• Draft and send out the weekly ISM newsletter
• Assist with event planning
• Maintain the ISM website, including updating information, pages, and links as necessary
• Maintain ISM social media postings (Facebook and Instagram).
• Assist with maintaining semesterly course lists and publishing to ISM website.
• Support IRIS programming and reporting as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands:

Be able to sit at a desk, attend and facilitate events (help setup and take down rooms), and navigate around campus to hang flyers.
