Department Overview:
The CAFO Program of the WI Department of Natural Resources’ Watershed Management Bureau regulates Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) in relation to discharges of manure and process wastewater pollutants to waters of the state.

Schedule:
It is preferred that the Intern works in person at the DNR office during normal business hours. Once proficiency is achieved, remote work is an option, but with a DNR issued laptop. Regular in person meetings are desired. Number of hours worked is flexible, depending on student's availability and work study dollars available. Working 8 to 15 hrs/wk is preferred. Work will not continue once work study funds are used up.

Qualifications:
Interest in water resources protection, biological systems engineering, or environmental engineering. Work-study required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Interest in and preferably some knowledge of water quality, hydrology, biological systems engineering, civil/environmental engineering, soils science, livestock operation infrastructure, or waste management infrastructure. Ability to work independently and efficiently to complete tasks. Ability to read and interpret technical reports and technical design standards. Ability to use Excel to conduct numeric analyses. Communications of technical information via e-mail or memos. Ability to conduct database upkeep. Additional skills that would be useful include; understanding of manure and livestock feed management practices, nutrient management planning, GIS, and state and federal water quality regulations.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
• Assist CAFO engineering staff with liquid manure “Days of Storage” calculation reviews. o Review submitted calculations for how many days of liquid manure storage a CAFO has based on available storage volumes, annual manure and wash-water production, collected contaminated runoff and precipitation on storages. Coordinate with CAFO review engineers as appropriate. o Issue “Days of Storage” review letters. • Assist CAFO engineering staff with preliminary review of CAFO agricultural engineering plans. o Review incoming engineering plans for substantial completeness items and compliance with site setbacks from groundwater, bedrock and wetlands. Coordinate with CAFO review engineers as appropriate. o Issue completeness letters and assign plans to review engineers for full reviews.
Physical Demands:
Ability to do office work. There will be occasional opportunities to do field work that will require good physical mobility as the work will be in rough terrain, but this is optional.
