Qualifications:

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old
• High School Diploma
• Energetic approach to learning
• Strong communication skills and ability to work well with students, administration, and support staff
• Respect for individual differences and individuality
• Experience working with middle school-aged students

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Must be comfortable problem solving and working in a fast-paced environment.
• Experience in building community within small and large groups
• Proven ability to maintain a professional relationship with students while serving as a friendly support system.
• Passion for working with students in grades K-12, experience working with summer camps, precollege programs, or international programs.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Group Leaders for the STEP Middle school program are hired to provide students with enhanced learning opportunities both in the classroom and during the programming day and are chosen for their experience working with children, an interest in the specific class topic, and an expressed interest to work with Badger Precollege.

• Attend required Badger Precollege and Youth Compliance staff training(s) prior to the program beginning.
• Assist the instructor in carrying out their responsibilities for students during all class times. Discuss with the instructor what their expectations are for you and students.
• Supervise students during different classroom activities around campus, including field trips, lab activities, other transitions around campus as needed
• Assist in the open communication among staff members: Instructional staff, Program Manager, Residential staff and other administrative staff.
• Group leaders are NOT responsible for formal disciplinary actions and should not take them. Report incidents to instructors or Program Manager, who will manage the situation. Fill out the Concern Report online for the incident and touch base with the Program Manager as necessary.
• Be responsible for taking attendance each day. Report any absences to the Program Manager.
• Be a role model for the students and maintain a professional relationship. Although you may form friendly relationships with the students, your job is not to be their friend, but rather their counselor.

Physical Demands:

Group Leaders will run activities and could supervise students on field trips throughout the UW campus. This can involve a substantial amount of movement at those times.
