Department Overview:

 We are looking for motivated undergraduate students who want to work in a corn breeding program. Activities are mostly carried out in the field, on experimental farms located in West Madison and Hancock.

Schedule:

 From 8:00 am to 5:30 pm, 3 times a week.
We will have corn fields in Verona (West Madison Agricultural Research Station, which is 20 minutes from campus) and Hancock (an hour and a half from here). In both cases, we all meet at Moore Hall and go to the fields together in a university van. Each day, we go in groups of 4 to 6 people.
We usually meet 8:00 am at Moore Hall, but on very hot days, we can start earlier (meeting at 7 am) and take a longer lunch break. However, each student must set aside the entire day for fieldwork. That is to say, even if you can't come every day, on the days that you do come, you need to be available from early morning until late afternoon.

Qualifications:

 Availability for fieldwork in corn seed production fields. Preference will be given to students of courses related to agriculture & livestock or biology in general.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The candidates must enjoy working outdoors and be very organized and careful with data collection for scientific purposes.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Help collecting data on corn crops for breeding purposes. Training will be provided for the assessments to be made on the corn plants.

Physical Demands:

The corn phenotyping process requires us to bend down and stand up several times in order to collect data on the roots and aerial parts of the plants.
