Department Overview:
The Michelle Kimple Lab in Department of Medicine is dedicated to understanding how the insulin-producing beta-cells of the pancreas respond to nutrients and hormones to function, multiply, and survive. Understanding the mechanisms behind these processes, and how they are affected in the pathophysiological conditions of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, is a critically important area of research. The long-term goal of the Kimple Lab is to translate these insights into new and improved diabetes therapeutics, preventing or even curing these life-long diseases.

Schedule:
Students will be expected to work part time (at least 10 hours/week) during the school year, and, depending on their schedule, part-time to full-time during the spring, summer and winter breaks. Because of this, students with large blocks of available time are preferred. Summer availability is preferred.

Qualifications:
Current UW-Madison undergraduate student, ideally Freshman or Sophomore status. Word processing and database/spreadsheet software familiarity required. Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently. Experience with molecular biology is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
Basic understanding of biological and experimental procedures. Ability to accurately record and organize data. Good communication skills and teamwork orientation. Highly motivated to learn.
Position Summary/Job Duties:
As an undergraduate research assistant, this individual will be part of the UW-Madison Department of Medicine and a member of a vibrant research endeavor focused on identifying new ways to prevent or treat diabetes using mouse and cell models. The individual will be a member of a collaborative, congenial team including other undergraduate students, graduate students, research specialists, post-doctoral researchers, and scientists. Duties include handling mice, recording mice biological parameters and blood glucose levels under different conditions, data collection and analysis, running experimental assays, and preparing samples for experimental analysis (e.g., prepping RNA/protein from samples).
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift 40 pounds and stand for long periods of time.
