Department Overview:
This position is a collaboration between Greater University Tutoring Service (GUTS) and the McBurney Disability Resource Center. GUTS is a Registered Student Organization (RSO) dedicated to connecting UW-Madison students with tutors for assistance with academic courses, language learning, and study skills support. The McBurney Center is the office for students with disabilities and academic accommodations on UW-Madison's campus.

Schedule:
-10-14 hours per week during regular office hours of 8:00am-4:30pm - Work schedule will be developed in partnership with the SLSS supervisor at the McBurney Center - The SLSS office is generally closed during academic breaks.

Qualifications:
-Must be a student (undergraduate or graduate) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison during employment - Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations, including individuals with disabilities and diverse cultural backgrounds - Able to make a one-year commitment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :
*Required: - Completed 1 year of post-secondary studies - Knowledge of evidence-based study skills methods and techniques - Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills - Since this position meets directly with students, candidates must be very dependable and have strong time-management and organizational skills - Ability to incorporate student and supervisor feedback to improve the program - Strong commitment to maintaining confidentiality of sensitive student records - Demonstrated commitment to creating a welcoming and safe environment for all students *Preferred: - The availability to work 4+ hours per shift - Experience with tutoring, peer mentoring, coaching, or counseling - Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Zoom, and student information systems - Experience working with individuals with disabilities
Position Summary/Job Duties:
*Summary: The Study and Learning Skills Specialists (SLSS) provide academic support to undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities. SLSS staff members are tutors who teach study and learning skills rather than subject-specific content. This is a collaborative service with support from the McBurney Disability Resource Center and the Greater University Tutoring Service (GUTS). Students who connect with the McBurney Center may have SLSS assigned as an accommodation if they struggle with executive functioning, time-management, organizational skills, or general study methods. Common disability categories served by SLSS include ADHD, Anxiety, and Specific Learning Disorder. *Job Duties: - 70% Facilitate one-on-one, student-centered appointments to support students with disabilities as they reflect on their existing study skills, identify academic strengths and needs, and develop a personalized plan for academic success. Staff are expected to review study and learning skills strategies with students and provide the students with relevant handouts. Topics will vary but are likely to include time management, organization, procrastination, note-taking, reading, memorization, and test preparation skills. - 15% Maintain appropriate documentation, such as by writing case-notes and updating a student information system. - 5% Consult with other professional staff members at the McBurney Center regarding individual learning needs, accommodations, and student concerns on a case-by-case basis. Staff are also expected to make effective referrals to other campus resources, such as the Writing Center, various Learning Centers, Academic Advising services, and the Athletic Department. - 5% Engage in outreach activities, like staffing drop-in tutoring sessions, presenting to students and staff from various Learning Centers, or creating study skills handouts for campus partners. - 5% Attend weekly supervision meetings and/or team meetings.
Physical Demands:
You must be able to meet with students for in-person appointments.
