Department Overview:

 The Chazen Museum of Art collects, preserves, interprets, and exhibits works of art and presents related educational programs in support of the teaching, research, and public service mission of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The Chazen does this because the visual arts enrich individual human experience and because knowledge of art is essential to understanding diverse cultures, past and present.

 Undergraduate students must have completed their first year of course work in good standing.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Able to manage time and complete tasks for multiple assignments. Research and writing skills. Demonstrates maturity and discretion. Research assistant will receive training to use the museum’s collection database (Embark) and carefully handle prints, drawings, and photographs in the collection.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The research assistant will work with Chazen’s Curator of Works on Paper in planning for multiple projects related to the permanent collection, new acquisitions, and gallery installations. The research assistant will research and write summaries (with citations) about artists and objects of art, compile and track lists of objects, enter information into the collection database closely following the museum’s guidelines, review object files, add research to object files, create and maintain spreadsheets to organize and track information, create bibliographies, assist in the preparation of presentations, run reports from the museum’s collection database, and other tasks. Work will be done on site at the museum.

Physical Demands:

This job may include limited handling of works on paper in storage, which involves standing, lifting objects up to 25 pounds from low and high shelves, and moving those objects to and from work counters. However, as the focus of this job is research, accommodations can be made to reduce or eliminate these physical demands.
