Department Overview:

Dr. Sheng's research group is located in the UW-Madison School of Nursing’s Signe Skott Cooper Hall, near UW-Hospital. We have a strong team environment to support research activities. Students will enjoy a modern workspace and working closely with faculty, staff and students to advance research.

The UW-Madison School of Nursing is housed on the west end of campus near UW-Hospital in the beautiful Signe Skott Cooper Hall, where employee wellness is a focus. Researchers at the UW–Madison School of Nursing investigate, innovate, collaborate across disciplinary boundaries, and translate research into effective solutions. We conduct, support and promote equity-based research and engage participants and partners from diverse communities across the state and the nation, including those most affected by issues of health equity.

Schedule:

Hours will vary based on program schedule; primarily on weekends; estimated 5-10 hours/week around active delivery weeks. This position will not have steady weekly hours, so it's great for someone that needs to balance occasional or additional work with their studies.

Qualifications:

Enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in Public Health, Communication, Nursing, Social Work, Education, or related fields. Those enrolled in other programs, but with significant prior experience or education in those fields may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience working with Asian American or immigrant communities.
• Knowledge of breast cancer, cancer prevention, or community health disparities.
• Bilingual or multilingual skills (e.g., Mandarin, Korean, Hmong, Hindi, Vietnamese, etc.).
• Commitment to health equity and cultural humility.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Experience giving lectures, presentations, or health education to group.
• Strong communication and facilitation skills.
• Ability to demonstrate and lead basic strength or stretch activity safely and clearly.
• Familiarity with community-based participatory research (CBPR) principles.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

• Deliver program content on breast cancer prevention, risk reduction, and healthy living to small groups of Asian American community participants.
• Present educational lectures using pre-developed slides and materials.
• Facilitate interactive group discussions and culturally tailored activities that promote participant engagement.
• Demonstrate and guide participants through simple physical activity routines (e.g., stretching, light aerobic movement, walking-based activities).
• Attend and participate in facilitator training and planning meetings with the research team.
• Collaborate with the Community Advisory Board (CAB) to ensure delivery is culturally appropriate.
• Provide ongoing feedback on session delivery and participant responsiveness.
