What is PEOPLE?

The University of Wisconsin – Madison’s Precollege Enrichment Opportunity Program for Learning Excellence (PEOPLE) is one of the Student Engagement and Scholarship Programs housed within the Division for Teaching and Learning (DTL). PEOPLE is a college prep scholarship program designed for low-income and first-generation college students. Their journey prepares them to be a viable college candidate, apply for admission to, and enroll at the Universities of Wisconsin institutions, with an emphasis on the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where they are then supported by our College unit.

Since the inception of PEOPLE in 1999, participation has grown from 66 high school students to over 1,100 in the pathway. The Precollege unit serves Precollege Scholars from 9th grade until the completion of senior year in high school. The PEOPLE College Success Center serves PEOPLE Scholars enrolled at UW-Madison from matriculation through to undergraduate degree completion. Over 1,800 PEOPLE Scholars have attended the University of Wisconsin - Madison under the full tuition scholarship.

While this role will be directly supervised by PEOPLE College staff, the Digitals Comms Intern will work to support the marketing and branding efforts across all units: College, Precollege Madison, and Precollege Milwaukee.

Minimum: 2 Maximum: 10

Schedule:

A flexible weekly schedule will be created in collaboration with the supervisor. It will require approximately 2-10 hours a week throughout the school year. The schedule is flexible Monday – Friday between the hours of 9 am - 5pm with occasional evening and/or weekend work depending on events.
The ideal candidate will be staying in this position through at least May 2026.

Salary/Wage Range/Lump Sum:

Minimum: $15.00 Maximum: $18.00

Qualifications:

-Current UW-Madison student in good non-academic standing with the University
-Possess cultural humility and responsiveness, as well as a strong capacity to work effectively with a diverse population of staff, scholars, and other stakeholders
-Canva or equivalent content creation experience
-Social media management experience
-Able to make a two-semester commitment from October 2025 through May 2026
-Preference to a PEOPLE Scholar or student with work-study, although not required
-Photography/videography experience would be a plus but not required

-Applicants must be reliable, self-motivated, creative, and detail-oriented. The ideal applicant will have exceptional writing and editing skills, the ability to work with minimal supervision, follow detailed instructions, and exercise good judgment on social media posts. They will have an elevated level of experience with social media platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Working knowledge of social software to manage social media communications is a plus.

-Ability to think creatively about communications and marketing strategies and identify gaps in current structures
-Ability to create an inclusive, welcoming, and open working environment

Preference will be given to candidates who have proficiency in:
-Canva or other content creation platforms for social media
-Social media management and strategy
-Newsletter creation
-Airtable
-Video production and editing for promotional use
-Photo editing in Adobe Photoshop
-Creating, editing, and organizing files in Google Drive applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.).
-Creating, editing, and formatting files in Microsoft Office applications
-Website design and development, specifically in WiscWeb software
-Promoting diverse learning opportunities that spark exploration & develop socio-cultural awareness

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The PEOPLE Program is seeking a creative and ambitious student to join our college Marketing Team to assist with the program’s marketing and branding efforts. The Digital Communications Intern will collaborate with professional staff to manage our social media presence (on both the College and Precollege pages), the PEOPLE College weekly newsletter and email marketing platforms, as well as create promotional content for print materials and more. This role will also collaborate with other students on the Marketing Internship Team (who serve in the Graphic Design Intern role). Primary duties for the Digital Communications will include:

Marketing/Communications
Create flyers and graphics as needed
Create graphics for social media posts. Work collaboratively to maintain and improve PEOPLE’s digital presence.
Assist social media marketing strategies and communication
Create and distribute weekly newsletters
Designing, laying out, and formatting multi-page documents in Canva, or other similar software
Writing for publications and event/program promotion
Assist with website management
Assist with implementing marketing plans for projects
Content Development
Researching and developing content (both visual and written)
Photograph and video capture scholar experiences
Interview scholars and create information-sharing systems to highlight scholar success
Administrative
Maintaining the Digital Communications Calendar on Airtable
Maintaining and optimizing the digital communication submission process
Monitor PEOPLE College Scholars email inbox and other online accounts
Maintain confidentiality of online account information and other sensitive information
Maintain confidentiality of student information in compliance with FERPA regulations and university policies.
Other duties as assigned
