Department Overview:

The UW Carbone Cancer Center is committed to defeating cancer through rapid application of groundbreaking research, prevention, and treatment. UW Carbone is an integral part of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and UW Health, bringing together more than 330 physicians and scientists from 50 departments and nine schools across campus to conduct research and translate laboratory discoveries into new cancer patient treatments. Schedule:

This paid position will begin during fall 2025 semester. We expect 10 hours a week at a minimum, with flexibility around exam schedules. We hope to hire a student who is available beyond one semester (including summer work if the student desires it).

Qualifications:

The ideal student is interested in a career in communications or the health sciences fields. We seek a student who is curious and creative to join the UW Carbone communications team's projects in internal and external communications. The student will be assigned projects and work closely with the Communications Specialist for mentoring and skill building.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

-Time management
-Ability to meet deadlines
-Openness to edits and feedback
-Ability to write clear, concise and engaging copy.
-Ability to interview sources and take accurate notes
-Photography a bonus but not required
-Mailchimp experience a bonus but not required

Position Summary/Job Duties:

The Communications Assistant will be assigned projects that include writing for staff newsletters as well as newsletters and social media to reach patient/general public. The students will schedule and conduct interviews, write copy according to style guidelines, and work with the Communications Specialist and sources to ensure accurate, clear information is being shared.

Physical Demands:

This position is mostly remote, though students can conduct in-person interviews on campus if they wish.
